do i need these software items installed?
dear community,

i apologize if i'm posting in the wrong place ...i wanted to ask some experienced folk whether i could remove some items from my computer, to streamline what i have installed... for example:

(i have included some screen shots of what revo uninstaller shows as installed on my machine, if that might help! and here are descriptions)

i have what i believe is the most recent version of java, but there are still older versions leftover,

and there are several "adobe" components, that im not sure if i need all of (...and if i was to install an alternative program, like foxit reader, do any of you happen to know if i could uninstall all adobe components without any ill effects? i am concerned that adobe takes up a lot of storage and/or memory resources...)

and all of the microsoft.net framework, and visual c++ (and "visual j"), and MSXML installations, do i need to keep all?

and some things (i've tried googling what they are before asking of you, but haven't gotten very far, and don't want to make a poor choice and nuke my operating system!) ...im just not sure if they are essential or necessary, for example:

what's called "aol install," and "aol coach." i do have and use aol, but im not sure if i need both of these.

conexant (modem?) and dell wlan wireless card (are both of these what make it possible to connect to the internet?)

and how about "digital line detect," "modem diagnostics," and "net waiting," are all 3 essential?

and "divx plus directshow" and "divx setup" - do i need to keep both of these?

and lastly, rtc client and opencase media agent,

and dell photos and videos launcher? i don't know what these are and whether i need them

thank you so much to anyone who took the time to read this post...

Is your computer running Windows XP or Windows Vista or Windows 7, 32-bit or 64-bit?

----------------------------------------------------------

Don't jump the gun and uninstall/remove anything yet that you're not sure about.

You didn't advise if it's the 32-bit or 64-bit version of Windows Vista.

----------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click it to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, restart the computer.

After the computer settles down from the restart, start HiJackThis and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the ENTIRE file here.

Hello

Questionable Toolbar/Plugin Uninstall:

Do you use all those toolbars/browser plugins that are installed?

CashCrate Toolbar is an open to debate toolbar.

InboxDollars is an open to debate toolbar.

MyPoints Point Finder is an open to debate toolbar.

Next

It's important to remove older versions of Java since it does not do so automatically and old versions still leave you vulnerable.

Remove any older versions:
  • Click on Start > Control Panel.
  • Click on Programs and Features.
  • Select the following from the list:

    Java(TM) 6 Update 29
  • Click the Uninstall button.

Regards,

Richard

Unless you actually need and use it, Adobe AIR can be uninstalled.

Adobe Reader 10.1.4 needs to be updated to version 11.0.0.

Java(TM) 6 Update 29 can be uninstalled. Only the current version Java 7 Update 9(which you have) is needed.

The update feature of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.62.0.1300 needs to be run so it can update to version 1.65.1.1000 and update its definition files.

Mozilla Maintenance Service can be uninstalled.

VLC Media Player 0.9.2 is very outdated and needs to be updated to version 2.0.4. If you don't need and use it, uninstall it instead.

Install the free version of SUPERAntiSpyware 5.6.0.1014. Make sure to update its definition files during the install process.

Note: During the update or install process of the above, make sure to uncheck and decline to install any extras, such as toolbars/homepages/browsers, that it offers.

After you're all done, do the following.

---------------------------------------------------------

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

Click "Updates(tab) - Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "OK".

Click "Scanner(tab) - Perform quick scan - Scan".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, the number of them will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished, click "Show Results".

Make sure that EVERYTHING is selected, then click "Remove Selected".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, click "Yes".

Start Malwarebytes Anti-Malware again.

Click "Logs"(tab).

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "Open".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

---------------------------------------------------------

Start SUPERAntiSpyware.

Click "Check for Updates".

When the definition files have updated, click "Close".

Select the "Quick Scan" option, then click "Scan your Computer".

If infections or problems are found during the scan, a list will appear and the number of them will be highlighted in red.

When the scan is finished and the scan summary window appears, click "Continue".

Make sure that EVERYTHING in the list is selected, then click "Remove Threats".

Click "OK - Finish".

If you're prompted to restart to finish the removal process, do so.

Start SUPERAntiSpyware again.

Click "View Scan Logs".

Highlight the scan log entry, then click "View Selected Log".

When the scan log appears in Notepad, copy-and-paste it here.

flavallee, thanks for getting back

and, richard, it's nice to meet you

...the cashcrate, inboxdollars, and mypoints toolbars - i know they're there and unfortunately i am temporarily stuck with them...i got involved with those programs and now am trying to get the rest of the required earnings that i can get out but as soon as i do, i am so done with them...

i have uninstalled adobe air, and the mozilla maintenence service.

about adobe in general, do you happen to know if, i install an alternative program like foxit reader, can i uninstall adobe without ill effects?

regarding vlc, do you know if it poses a security risk to not have it updated? im a little wary of updating it because, sometimes i update and things do not play well with my computer (this happened with internet explorer 9).

i tried to remove the older java, both through the control panel, and even with "javara," and it wouldnt remove ...then i used revo and
...........revo seems to have uninstalled all java installations...
have i messed up my computer?
...i've visited java's website to see if i could download the latest version but, i'm not sure which version to download, so i need to ask your help
...or, would going to a previous system restore point help? that might be a little advanced for me, but with your help i will try...

i ran the malwarebytes and superantispyware scans but will paste the logs later...i'm worried about java for now...

I personally use Adobe Reader instead of Foxit Reader because Foxit Reader will occasionally not open some PDF files that Adobe Reader will.

------------------------------------------------------

Outdated programs and plug-ins tend to pose more of a security risk than current ones.

If you're actually using VLC Media Player, I'm sure that version 2.0.4 is much improved over version 0.9.2.

------------------------------------------------------

Using a third-party uninstaller, such as Revo Uninstaller, can result in removing more than what you intended to - which is one reason why I don't use them.

If Revo Uninstaller removed ALL versions of Java, you can reinstall version 7 Update 9(1.7.0.9) from here.

Thanks for the SAS and MBAM scan logs.

I recommend you run a quick scan with them every couple of weeks(after you first update their definition files), then select and remove what they find.

This will prevent malware, spyware, rogues, hijackers, adware trackers, etc. from accumulating in your computer.

---------------------------------------------------------

There will be no ill affects from uninstalling Adobe Reader and replacing it with Foxit Reader.

It will attempt to install a toolbar and other extras during the install process, so read each window carefully so you can decline or uncheck to install those unneeded extras.

GREAT, THANKS!

can i ask you about the other programs...

the microsoft.net framework, and visual c++ (and "visual j"), and MSXML installations, do i need to keep all?

and what's called "aol install," and "aol coach." i do have and use aol, but im not sure if i need both of these.

conexant (modem?) and dell wlan wireless card (are both of these what make it possible to connect to the internet?)

and how about "digital line detect," "modem diagnostics," and "net waiting," are all 3 essential?

and "divx plus directshow" and "divx setup" - do i need to keep both of these?

and lastly, rtc client and opencase media agent,

and dell photos and videos launcher? i don't know what these are and whether i need them

there may be more i need to ask you about but wanted to square these away first...thanks again!

The .NET Framework and Visual C++ and MSXML entries are required for certain programs and devices to work, so leave them alone.

Since you use AOL, leave all its entries alone.

The Conexant modem and Dell wireless entries are the drivers for those devices, so leave them alone.
