I've uninstalled 60-80 programs since my daughter stopped using it.

The ones left are ones that I can't uninstall and those I'm not sure about.

For Catz 5 (which I don't play) and ArcSoft VideoImpression 2 When I try to unistall I get the following: "The InstallShield Engine (iKernelexe) could not ne launched. No such interface supported".

For IObit Apps Toolbar v7.0 the message I get is: "Error 1316. A network error occurred while attempting to read from file C:\Windows|installer|obitappsToolbar.msi"

When you inherit a computer that still contains all the "debris" and problems from its previous owner, the best option is to do a clean reinstall of Windows and get a fresh start with it.

One reason why you're having problems and getting warning messages when you try to uninstall some of them is because Windows is damaged - possibly from the use of registry/file "cleaners" and from infections.

OK I restored factory settings from the Recovery last night and didn't hang when I tried went online and tried to make it do so by having lots of pages open at the same time and refreshing and streaming media. So far so good

Currently downloading 96 Windows updates. I'll see how this goes over the next few days and if all is well well close this Sunday evening.

How do I check for driver updates? I have visited the Dell websites and downloaded the Dell System Detect application, but it will not install, giving the following message: ""Unable to install or run this application. This application requires Version 4.0 Full or other compatible .NET Framework."

Still no hang ups as previous.

Thanks.

What's the 7-character "service tag" number on the sticker of that Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop?

---------------------------------------------------------

Go to Control Panel - Device Manager.

Are there any entries with a yellow ? or ! next to them?

If there is, advise what their names are.

According to service tag number 8HP0VJ1, here is the support and driver downloads site that's specific only to your Dell Inspiron 1545 laptop.

You should add and save this site in your browser favorites/bookmarks list so you can readily refer to it when needed.

----------------------------------------------------------

If there are no entries in the Device Manager that have a yellow ? or ! next to them, and if all of the devices in that laptop are listed and show as working properly, there's no compelling reason to install or update any drivers.

----------------------------------------------------------

According to the drivers and downloads section, your laptop appears to have these devices:

IDT 92HD71B audio

Intel GM45 chipset

Conexant D400 56K modem

Alps touchpad

Dell Wireless 1397/1510 WLAN mini-card

Dell Wireless 365/370 bluetooth module

Marvell 88E80xx 10/100 ethernet controller

Intel GM45 graphics

----------------------------------------------------------

There doesn't seem too much wrong there. However I have successfully got the laptop to hang using the Dell Diagnostics tool to test the hard drive. Repeated the test and it did it again. First time since I reset the machine.

Are you running the hard drive test from here?
http://www.dell.com/support/troubles.../8HP0VJ1?s=DHS

It may be a glitch in the system - try this hard drive test.

Yes that was the dell test page I was trying to use.

Upon starting the download and install the SeaTool it prompted me to download Microsoft NET.Framework 4 which I have now done.

I have used the SeaTool to run a Short Generic test and it has passed.

However it has failed the Short Drive Self Test using the SeaTool. What do people make of that?

You have already restored to factory settings - if not, we would suggest that you back up any needed data and files asap.
To fail any part of the hard drive test may mean that the hard drive is about to fail and needs replacing.
This time run the Long test

Passed the Short Generic Test
The Long Generic Test makes the computer hang just as the Dell test did.
