Iv managed to delete the recycle bin by accident whilst deleting some items off of vista, now i cant seem to get the main desk top bin back.
When i go into c:\ drive and change view to show hidden, i can make a short cut to put on the desktop, but it will not delete items from the recycle bin? it will still play the "emptying bin" sound.
Its the same with the recycle bin from the sidebar, i get the "calculating files to be deleted" box, then it plays the emptying bin sound, but i still have files in the recycle bin?
Also with the short cut, it does not ask for conformation about file deletion, when trying to empty it.
any help as to where or how to replace the original recycle bin back to desktop would be much appreciated
i have gone through the system registry, but have had no luck
please note, that the recycle bin is not in the recycle bin (if that makes sence)
and that i can not use a system restore or i will lose hours of coding work (please do not ask for details as to my coding work as i can not disclose them) | | Senior Member with 117 posts. | | | | suggest going to the registry HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Deskt op\NameSpace and create a new key called "{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E}" then set the (Default) entry for this key to Recycle Bin. | | Junior Member with 6 posts. | | | | The correct way to bring back the Recycle Bin to Vistas desktop Hi, I deleted my Recycle Bin by mistake also, and and after a Google search led me here, and i had read a similar fix as yours James, although that is a correct registry edit, it doesnt apply, as to how to get the icon back to the desktop. If you check the registry you will see that the registry key is still there. which was the case when i deleted my Bin by mistake
Here is the correct way to go by it. And mind you this is for Vista, right click on the desktop then click personalize, once there look to the left pane near the top and click Change Desktop Icons, this is where you choose which icons you want to appear on your desktop, close/OK out and you're all done.

| You should NOT use Vista beta in a production enviroment! If your work is so important that you cannot do a system restore, why are you using Vista in the first place? I highly reccommend against it. It is a beta, and is for testing purposes only. Just a friendling warning.
WHB456's solution should work. Just make sure that Recycle Bin is checked. | | Junior Member with 6 posts. | | | | Yes i know that it should be used for testing, that which i am doing, but i have a back system that hasn't failed me, i have installed this test version many times, and have had to use my backup of XP with no problem, trust me i have things under control. I know my way around. and the solution that i posted does work, thats the purpose of checking recycle bin so that it will show up on the desktop. | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | | | Thanks WHB456, a google search lead me to this post and I've been beating my head against the wall trying to get my recycle bin back. I knew it had to be something simple like that, just kept missing that nifty little "change desktop icons" link. | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | Join Date: Mar 2007 Experience: Advanced | | i have a fix to the recycle bin problem right click on the desktop then select peronalize , then select change dektop icons tick the box the says recycle bin finally click apply and presto it should be back where you left it | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | Join Date: Mar 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | deleted recycle bin in Vista I've read the posts here, and I have the entry in the registry, but the Recycle Bin is greyed out. I can't check it to put it back on my desktop. Any idea as to why it is greyed out? | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Experience: Intermediate | | Hi, I also deleted my recycle bin on vista and I have gone through the process you suggested to restore it to my desktop and that worked fine. The problem is that you can either restore the full recycle bin icon or the empty recycle bin icon and it looks full all the time or empty all the time so it's not totally fixed like it should be and I haven't been able to restore the original recycle bin as yet. Any idea on how to do that? | | Senior Member with 703 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2002 Location: Quebec |

#12 | I used the "Personalization" solution suggested in this thread. However, I can restore a full or empty recycle bin...but the recycle bin graphic does not change to indicate "full" or "empty". | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | Join Date: Jul 2007 Experience: Intermediate |

On the left pane ,select change desktop icons. tick the recycle bin box, now left click the full recycle bin icon and click change icon, select the highlighted icon wich should be the full recycle bin icon. now do the same with the empty icon and change it back to the empty icon wich should be the highlighted icon, now click apply this worked for me hope it does for you to. | | Junior Member with 1 posts. | | |
