Wow, I see there has been progress here since I've been gone for 3 months

Now, to see if I can test this later....maybe this weekend as I have other fires to put out right now.

Thanks for the "HOPEFUL" solution

Is it an HP printer? Read this:

Yeah, when you started in on printers and Vista the red flag went up. I have an HP Officejet v4.0 so I'm really concerned about this. My printer is nowhere near ready to be replaced - works great - so my thoughts about getting a new computer are really on hold until Microsoft gets these problems ironed out. Fortunately, at this point in time, it isn't a necessity anyway.

I think it's more of an HP lack of follow up on the drivers

Oh yeah. I know it mentioned either updating the driver to be compatible or adding a patch, but HP just seemed to have their collective noses in the air and apparently still do. I've tried working with HP on problems with their computer in the past and they are not the most cooperative people to work with. It took a letter from our state consumer affairs department to remedy the last problem I had with them.

LOL. It worked! I've only wasted a week trying to get my Vista laptop to get to shared printers on my network. The printer on the XP machine just gave a "could not access" message, but then I tried the printer on the win98se machine and it gave the 0x00000866 error that allowed me to find this thread.

Thanks all.

Had a similar issue, don't know whether the message is the same -- mine involved something like can't find "print monitor"

It turns out UAC has to be enabled during this part of the "install".

You do not need Vista drivers, by the way, as long as the printer is not directly connected to the Vista machine. You just need to try to print something, and you will be prompted to install drivers. Do nothing -- just let it look where it wants. But have UAC enabled.

Can you inform us novices what "UAC" means?

UAC means user account control. I believe the previous poster means it should be on? By default, it is turned on, and that's what I had when I finally got my printers to install.

Go to Control Panel -> Users and you will see a button next to "Turn User Account Control on or off."

What a saga that was just to print! I had a college assignment which I did using Excel Microsoft Office 2007 and as a result I couldn't open it on another older machine!
Having tried a number of the 'solutions' here none of them worked for me!
I have a wired network just now till I get round to installing the wireless router. The printer is upstairs in my bedroom where the kids cant get hold of it with a 10 yr old HP pavillon running ME, downstairs in the lounge I have an E machines running XP approx 7 yrs old and have got a Sony Vario VGN-N38E/W running Vista, 2 weeks old!
Having installed and uninstalled and played around with settings and getting error 0x00000866 and error 0x00000057 plus can't do that and you dont have authority blah blah blah I have now managed to print.
Here is how I did it. Printer is an Epson stylus C46.

I put on the PCs in the network and they all found each other and communicated. Intalled the software from the CD and the Epson was put in as a local printer connected to LPT1. The \\server\printer port was there but selection ended in an error and the 'net use ......... / persistent:yes' thing did nothing that I could see. I opened properties as an administrator then selected ports I selected the \\server\printer and deleted it! Then I added a port yes you guessed it the exact same port \\server\printer and hey presto the printer was assigned to that port with no issue! test page worked great my print preferences work and my assignment is now printed. I hope this helps someone.
Thanks for the help to the site I wouldn't have figured it out without a hint from here.

Smile Network printer problem - solved
TechB solved my problem... almost! The suggestion to install the printer on the computer first then change the port led me to my solution. I hopped on our network and located the network printer icon, then right-clicked on it and chose "connect...". I was then prompted to find the driver files from the CD-ROM and after trying a few different driver folders on the CD, one of them finally worked. Thanks to everyone on this forum!
