I do not know the program, jnibori, but like many others, I have Vista dual booting on two partitions of the same Hard disk. It looks like Dariks... would wipe both installations, which is not what I would want in the event

Yes, it will wipe all drives (and everything) simultaneously. I learned that the hard way. I should have mentioned that earlier. Sorry.

I'll bump, and reword with your words, if you'll indulge me.

Thanks!
Hi,
Sorry noone dealt with your request. I think one problem is that there are so many different ways published on the web, all relating to different configrations, that we, ourselves, are a little confused. At the risk of introducing yet another way, here is my offering. It looks long and tedious. This is mainly because I have detailed it for the newbie. On analyses it is not too much. (I cannot understand why MS made it so hard, when it was going to be the very first problem everyone encountered!)

Boot and Nuke is a (free) bootable CD, which reportedly wipes out the data to meet DoD standards, which should leave a clean drive.

I'm only posting again because I'm curious if I am missing something. Also, I'm only suggesting this as a work-around, as I am sure there are other ways to accomplish this task.
This looks as good a solution as many other possible ones. And there is no reason why Vista should have any effect on CD booting from the XP disk or any other. But, not having tried it myself (I plan to tonight), I'm not sure what XP's CD "sees" when it boots since Vista would be completely unknown territory for it. And that may explain why deleting the partition proves to be a problem.

But certainly there are many ways of solving the problem, including removing the contents of the disk in any of a 100 ways, so that XP sees nothing at all.

I'm having the same issue
I'm having the same problem (bought a new dell pc with vista pre-installed) and I'm wondering if anyone has found a definitive way of achieving this without using a bootdisk (as i have no floppy drive).

Anyone know of a tried, tested, and true method of reformatting installing XP Pro on my new PC?

Deleting vista
i am a TAFE student. i bought a laptop and yes dreaded vista was on it. the only way to delete xp off the partition was to go into BIOS anddisable floppy drive, and also move it to bottom of the queue. then ran xp normally and it ran like the old days. but beware HP owners, i am having trouble finding drivers from HP such as Audio. if anyone can find xp drivers for presario c700 i'm keen to know where

I have a HP compaq Presario, and found no probs with drivers at all. go to the HP site and let it auto detect your computer, it will inform you of any and all drivers available. I found drivers for XP and Vista no problem.

Now i have tryed it and i want to install Xp again so i try to boot from my Xp CD but it dosent work. Instead i end up at Caldera DR-DOS.

So i think i'm in over my head here and i need some help to remove Vista so that i get a clean Pc again and then install Xp

So how do i remove Vista ?
OK ... the easiest thing to do is:-
find a computer that runs Win Xp, connect your Vista HDD as slave to the XP machine, then format the Vista HDD.
Reconnect the newly formatted HDD to its original machine, place the XP installation CD into the CD-Drive and set the machine to use the CD-Drive as the first boot medium ...
...the process should be pretty straight fofrward from here on as you will be installing XP onto the freshly formatted HDD. This will work ... and trust me I tried different methods of getting rid of Vista. - Just make sure you've backed up any important stuff before you kill Vista.
