One reason I stopped recommending that years ago was because it made it more difficult for people to determine if an icon was for an actual file or just the shortcut to one. This resulted in numerous times where people deleted something like their actual document rather than just a link to it.

1. Open REGEDIT.EXE
2. Open the key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
3. Open the Key LNKFILE
4. Rename the value IsShortcut
5. Log out and back in again.
6. To reset it, just rename the key back again, and log off and back on.

Glad that worked and thanks for posting back. Amazing how so much stays the same. That tip was on my site for over 10 years.
