Vista issue
I have the same problem with ATI Mobility Radeon X700 !!!

Vista dosent remeber the monitors position, this is very annoying!!!

So, it isnt nVidia issue, it is Vista issue!!!

I used to have a similar problem, until this morning.

I have downloaded the current nVidia driver from Dell.

My secondary monitor now stays positioned on top of the laptop display as instructed, even after I wake it up or restart the Vista or re-dock the laptop.

Acer Travelmate 8104 ATI Radeon X700
I'm having the same problem on an Acer Travelmate with an ATI Radeon X700 while running dual external monitors.

However, i've had this configuration for about a year with no problems, and only when i ran the recovery disk to re-install windows, did i start getting this problem!

I'm having the same issue with my new work laptop! I'm running XP, not Vista, so it's not a Vista only issue.

My video card is ATI Mobility Radeon X2300.

This is extremely annoying as I'm locking & unlocking my computer all day long.

Do the settings revert while the machine is switched off (ie when you turn the machine on, they have reverted), or does it start up normally, then a minute or so later revert to the default settings?

Mine were saved for a minute, then would revert. I solved this problem by stopping all startup applications in msconfig, then enabling them one by one to see what application was causing the settings to revert. Turned out to be eLaunch by Acer - a program to control 4 special keys on some Acer notebooks.

Try re-installing the display drivers.
It should work. I am using dual monitors.

Same problem with XP
I have a similar problem with my Dell Precision M60, running XP Pro. I can set up the dual view in the docking station and it works perfectly normally, including switching off and restarting without having to reset the dualview. If, however, I switch the computer off, remove it from the docking station and use it without the second monitor attached, the next time I use it in the docking station, I have to reset the dualview. The dualview worked perfectly until about six months ago! I have downloaded and installed the latest nVIDIA driver from Dell but this did improve things.

I have a Dell Precision M6300 with Vista in a Dockingstation with two external Monitors (one on DVI, one on VGA, the right is the primary). Switching off and on works without loosing this configuration. But the setting gets lost when undocked and docked again, after some Vista updates, etc. Configuration involves several steps. Some must be done twice, because they do now work the first time

Is there a tool which saves the current display configuration (monitors, resolutions, ...) and let you quickly choose between the saved configurations? For instance:
- Work: Two external Monitors on Docking-Station
- Notebook only
- Notebook on Beamer with 1280x720 (Movies, Games)
- Notebook on Beamer with 1204x728 (Presentation)
- Notebook on TV
...
