I think you've done it correctly. I just fixed the problem on this computer by following the same directions. (BTW - THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU for the instructions!) The last command gave me an error message, but it worked regardless when I rebooted.
I'm fairly experienced in computers and can't believe it took so long to find a solution. The java scripts were the problem for me. Should have come to this site first!

int1422 many thanks for your 'fix' for the sidebar, I have no idea what happened it had vanished along with the sidebar icon but using your suggested fix it worked...

This is what worked for me and the sidebar is back....

1. Open a command prompt by being Administrator (Right click on Command Prompt and click Run as Administrator)
2. CD c:\Program Files\Windows Sidebar ........(CD is a DOS COMMAND for CHANGE DIRECTORY )
3. Run these commands in this order:
1. regsvr32 -u sbdrop.dll
2. regsvr32 -u wlsrvc.dll
3. regsvr32 atl.dll
4. regsvr32 sbdrop.dll
5. regsvr32 wlsrvc.dll

Thanks to int1422 for the above fix which worked for me.

Errors when registering dll
If you follow the solution and find the dllreistrationserver (listed in error message) croaks when trying to reg the dlls, turn off user account control (uac), reboot and then try again.

Worked for me after uninstalling Kaspersky 7.0

Unable to fix this problem..
Hello everyone, I had this same problem with the Windows sidebar gadgets showing up as white blocks about 6 months ago and it suddenly fixed itself the next day for some reason. But after installing SP1 yesterday the same problem came back and it won't go away. But this problem goes beyond the sidebar gadgets as features like YouTube Flash videos and Google Image search results don't show up. AIM text doesn't show up in the IM boxes either. I've applied all of the fixes mentioned in this thread (command prompt .dlls, resetting IE7, reinstalling Java, etc) and none of them have fixed the problem. Anyone know what is causing this? I really don't want to have to restore my entire laptop .

I just wish to add my thanks for this solution. It solved not only my gadgets problem, but also: gmail being unable to load standard view, my partner being unable to access ukonline email , menus not appearing in my regular websites, and several other functionality issues.

I'd tinkered with everything I could think and am SO GLAD I found the reinstating dll solution.

In common with other people I had a McAfee incident immediately prior to the dysfunction - I had uninstalled it in disgust when they charged my credit card for another year's subscription without asking me. I am unimpressed that McAfee can cause such problems for their customers and waste their time and energy looking for solutions.

Anyway THANKs again!

@mkhalifa07: apparently some gadgets are coded in vbscript. The calendar gadgets is one of those. So in addition to regging jscript.dll, you also have to register vbscript.dll:
Quote:
regsvr32 vbscript.dll
should fix the calendar gadget.
