Sound recording not working with Vista
Hi

I write trivia games using 2-3 second snips of songs which I record from all over the web. The utility I used to do this on XP using my laptop was called Polderbits.

I have now upgraded to Vista however I can no longer record sound playing on my laptop. I would normally use Wave, Stereo Mix option on this progam but Vista is saying that the only option I have available to me is Line In whch means I can only record stuff from an external source. I have downloaded a number of other Sound Recording programs all with the same result. Does anyone know why Vista is now saying my sound card doesn't support this any longer ?

Help...

I have a few ideas ... Sound card/driver problems ... Realtek screwup.
But have you tried using Audacity to do the Recording n Editing ?? ... It supports Vista.
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

Are you using external speakers for the Laptop ??
You may need an Audio splitter ... to feed the speakers - and the line/mike in.

More about this .. starting about here ...

Is this a new Computer .. or an older one updated.
Just got around to trying Audacity in my Vista.

If it's a new one .. and you're using Audacity .. try setting the Audacity's record preferences to ..
M$ sound mapper instead of using stereo mix.
Stereo mix doesn't work with the newer sound chips.

This won't even work in my upgraded Vista boot drive ... but is OK in my OEM XP boot.
I suspect sound chip specific Realtek software is needed in my Vista boot for my 7.1 audio.

BTW .. Welcome to the Forum.

Sound recording not working with Vista
I have a relatively new Dell Insipron E1705 laptop and I'm trying to convert some magentic tapes to CD format while they are still playable. I have an ADS RX-150 converter and Canopus ADVC110 converter as well. But I can't seem to get either to record audio on this Vista Home Premium laptop.

I play a tape through either device and connect the device to a USB port. I have installed Audacity but it does not seem to recognize the USB port. There are no items listed in the input source drop-down list.

I think I should be able to do this recording task with this setup, but I can't seem to get it to work. It sounded as if some folks on this thread (Myob for example) had knowledge of such things. I was hoping I could get some help.

Thanks

jth

Assuming you can Play from the USB device ...
The idea of using Audacity ... Is to get it to record what the computer is playing.

Seems like Vista or the newer Sound devices/drivers have a problem doing this.
Probabaly the easiest way nowadays is to wire the audio out back to the audio in .. like so ..
http://forums.techguy.org/4594681-post17.html

Then tell Audacity to record from line in ... which is monitoring line out .. or what the computer is playing

You might try this procedure and see if you can enable Stereo Mix.

Then Select Stereo mix as the source for Audacity ... this will be what the computer is playing.

Red face Sound recording not working with vista
I checked out the two articles mentioned and I had alredy done one of them and I'm not sure about the one that wired line-in to line-out. My laptop has just a mic/line-in jack so I am assuming that this is what I should use. Also, one of the articles suggested that I try to find out what sound card was in my laptop. The only information I could find was two Multi-media entries in Belarc: 1) Logitech Microphone (Fusion) and 2) SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC.

I'm not sure where to go from here.

Thanks

Line Out to Line/Mic in will work ...
But unless you have external speakers or a headset .. and use the splitter ...
You won't be able to hear what your recording.
You might be able to see what's happening by looking at the Audacity waveform.

As near as I can figure .. The problem is that Vista left out the M$ sound mapper software.
You could have enabled this source in the the Audacity preferences.

Maybe there's a sound driver update ... That's not included in your Vista ..
but I don't know how to go looking for one.

Sure you don't want to reinstall XP ??
There's several things I can't do in Vista ... That was simple in XP.
