Let's start with some of the basics.

Since it's not clear, are you getting valid IP information from the router?

Every time I ping the router, the request times out. But earlier, when I manually input our ISP's DNS number in and pinged it again, it said "destination host unreachable"

i'm leaning to the possibility it could be the router thats the problem. As tomorroe I will find out if there's any change when I take my PC into work tomorrow and connect it upto the test network we have setup there.

Are you getting valid IP information? Likely not but it would be good to know for certain.

Start / run / cmd
then IPCONFIG /ALL

Need to get that part working first.

I am now convinced the problem must be my Netgear router somewhere. I have just connected my PC upto the test network here at work, and it connected first time, without a hitch.

Hmmmm

Glad it's not the network card since the computer functioned at work.

At home, if you connect directly to your modem, turn off both the modem and computer, turn on the modem and wait for a minute or so, then boot the computer, can you connect? What is the IP information then (don't give the last digits of the actual IP address since if it does connect it will be a public IP).

Just thought I'd let you guys know that my problem has been solved....after 3 or so days of a process of elimination!!!!

The problem, as I said before, would be something small, and it was....the network cable. But here's the weird part: The network cable will provide a successfull connection for every other pc in the house.....except my new one. It just doesn't like my new machine.

I tried a new network card, new router, all causing no real success, until the idea hit me when i connected it straight upto my pc: What if its something wrong with the cable?

And sure enough.....it was

Glad it never really was the network card or Vista drivers for it.

i just got my new pc last week and when i hook up my cable modem to my pc with the Ethernet cable it didnt work at first. my cable company told me to un plug the power cable to the modem for 10 minutes and plug it back up and restart the pc. and see what happens. when i start the pc back up it worked fine after that. the cable company said the modem had to reset the ip for the new pc and OS. i dont know if it will help you. but it might?

Their problem was a faulty network cable.

Many people who have read this thread now think it is finished because of the original thread creator saying he has solved his issue.
