Vista Networking Problem-Whats wrong??
Hi guys,

i've come here in the hopes someone can help me with my present, and very
annoying technical dilemma. I shall provide you with as much info as
possible, while hopefully not flooding you with too much info

Problem: I've just bought a brand spanking, custom made machine which I have
built myself to my own specs and spent a large quanity of hard earned cash
on. I installed Vista Ultimate on it, and everything was fine after the
install.

However, after plugging the network cable into my motherboard, the problems
began. First, i'm guessing it found our home network because it described it
as an "unidentifiable" network, but had "limited or no connectivity".

Now, when I had XP home ed on my old dell, it was a simple case of plugging
in the network cable, it finding the router and internet gateway, and
connecting to the internet through the router automatically. I was hoping
Vista would be able to do this but I am very sadly discovering this is not
the case.

A friend suggested I disable UPNP on the Netgear router i'm using and that
it should fix it.....it hasn't, and infact, the router isn't showing my pc as
a connected device, but the port number my machine is connceted to on the
router is lit up....so there must be connectivity somewhere!!!!

The network on my motherboard is also a 1GB connection, I'm thinking this
connection is too fast for the router to handle, so I slowed it to 100mbps with no change in connectivity. I just don't know what
the REAL problem is. I have been bashing my head on this problem for 2 days now, and have tried everything I can think of, including installing new so called vista compatible network drivers.

Any help guys?

cheers in advance for your time in reading this longwinded post!!!

That doesn't matter. Your router automatically decides what speed it gives your computer. Your Nic is probably a 10/100/1000 mb reader. If your router is delivering speed at 100mbps, your nic will switch to accepting/sending speeds at 100mbps.

Also, have you tried the Vista Network Diagnostics Tool? This can be very helpful at times.

I s it a retail release of Vista, or an earlier Beta. RC1 and, I think, RC2 had problems with ethernet adapter drivers. The solution was to install the XP drivers, which worked perfectly.

It is a full, brand new copy of Vista Ultimate. I have tried the Vista Network diagnostic tool and it can't "repair" the connection so to speak, I also tried a program called Network Magic which was no help at all.

I have also installed the latest Vista drivers for my Motherboard LAN connection with no change.

After 2 days of this....i'm getting down lol

Try a different nic card, apparently there are driver issues with many nic cards. It should just go right in as it did with XP. Does the nic card show without a "?" in Device Manager? One thing I learned from Linux is that Intel nic cards never seem to have problems being recognized, and the less you use network wizards the better off you will be.

No, the network card has been detected fine and is showing up properly in the device manager. I've never encountered a problem like this before.

Plus, i'm not using an actual network card, i'm using the network port on my Motherboard. Not sure if i mentioned that or not.

cheers

The network port is a nic card is it not? I am suggesting a separate nic card just to see if that is the issue.

Hmm, i'm never viewed it as a "card" as such. More a built in Network Interface Port. It still isn't working. Again i've been bashing my head on it all day again today with no luck.

I'll scrimp up a spare NI card at work tmorrow and bring it home and pop it in, see if it makes a difference. I don't think it will, but I'm going to cover all options avaliable if i can to sort this problem.

Well, tomorrow, i'm going to take my PC into work and hook it upto our project/test network and see what happens.

We have a Vista machine there and it works fine. I'll have the oppertunity to try a diff NIC card also if needed. But i'm hoping connecting it through a diff router shall do the trick.

We shall wait and see

Like I said it is widespread and it has to do with ethernet cards and their drivers.

Also make sure you are using a known working network cable and port on the router?

Does the network card show correctly in the Device Manager.

Make sure it is not disabled there as well. Have seen that on more than one computer for whatever reason.

Just to help eliminate the router as being part of the problem, what happens if you connect directly to the modem?

Well, originally I thought it may have been the switch that could have been causing the problem. So i removed the switch, and connected straight upto the router....same problem. I know the port is working, and the network cable is fine...as I was using teh same stuff not 4 days ago on my old Dell with everything working fine.

And yes, the network device is being shown correctly in the device manager, with the latest so called vista drivers installed too....and still the problem persists!!!
