Cool Bronson137
Hi, I have just installed Vista Ultimate (clean install) and it seemed OK but I cannot use the Microsoft Update. I have turned on Automatic Update but each time it closes with the following error:

Can anybody tell me how to fix this please or at least where to start looking? The copy has been activated or I would format and try again.

Thanks

If you have not attempted any customisation, then it should be on and working by default. However. Have a look in the Control panel/Security/Windows update, and look over on the left column at your settings. Mayb there is a problem there. Otherwise, I would reccomend a visiti to this page, where you can check the offending file, and download another copy if needed. (It
should sit in /Windows/System32

I have followed all links to help on Microsoft website but as yet have not found any way to get update to download. The service starts and runs until I check for updates when it stops. No updates have been downloaded since installation but networking was not available at install as my netgear WG3IIT wireless card has to be installed later.

Don't know what to try next!

That was a retail version of Vista? I believe MS have stopped updates for the Beta versions.

Yes OEM version bought with new hardware. No previous software on PC - fresh install on new HDD. Should I reformat and try again? I have activated this copy as I thought there might be a problem with WGA however I should be able to repeat that with the same hardware.

Thanks!

Yes. I think that would be a good alternative, as you have the OS software. Reactivation is not a problem but do not be in too much of a hurry. Untick the square option to "activate when on lin" at the commencement of the install. When you finally get to the desktop, before you try any customisation, try the update feature again.

No windows update after Vista clean install
A very astute fellow from Microsoft Community Forums suggested I might try unloading any old device drivers and I followed his advice. My Creative Extigy (which I would not call old however Creative has chosen not to write new drivers for Vista so it must be) was supported as a USB Audio device under Vista and worked fine. I disconnected the device, formatted and reinstalled (again clean install) and hey presto...the updates arrived!

Reconnected the USB Audio device and still the updates arrive. One other thing I did however was to use my onboard ethernet port instead of my Netgear wireless NIC so my PC was online during the installation.

I have not reactivated my copy of Ultimate at this stage and will wait for a couple of weeks before I do. As usual, no satisfactory solution - just a few maybes. Weird.

Thanks again for your assistance. Great site!
