vista very slow
i bought a new computer today with vista basic, this is the slowest operating system ive ever used. im sure my old 8086 booted up faster.
then installing programs !
they stop in mid install, and i found i had to click on them and it was waiting for me to say go ahead and install as it didnt like the install program.
ill play with it for a bit, but im glad i have a 2nd with xp pro installed, at least i can do things with my old system.
hate to say it but ill probably reformat and install xp on it

That is probably why your computer is running so slow. Vista recommends 2gb of ram alone.

vista slow
ok the specs
compaq 3.0 ghz sr2170nx
2 gig ram
160 gig hd
ati x1100 video
came pre installed vista home basic. just a horrible opperating system.
ive only been able to install and run 2 of my programs. just dose not like the installer program, and if you do get the program installed trying to run the program was another mess.
i finaly formatted the hard drive and install xp pro. only to find a new set of problems, seems like compaq has no drivers for this model except drivers for vista.
i did manage to find what chips were used for a few things. i got the sound working anfer quite a search and tryal of different drivers.
ati video was fun till i stumbled on a similar problem, i have the video working now, but the latest catalist installs under the 200 model and works.
now just need to find a usb driver and pci driver this compaq likes.

the only difference between my dell and this compaq, is i have a better vid card on the dell and a second hard drive.

very strange,

you have a better hdd than me, a gig mroe ram than me, same processor speed as me you were usin home premium same as i am yet my computer is runnin 1000 times better than what yours was supposibly running.

as for the having to click to accept when installing a program, thats a security feature which by myself is very favoured because if anything tried to install you have to give it permission therefore cutting out some virus/spyware/adware/programs that are picked up through browsing the net.

Imo vista beats xp hands down as all the problems i have are now fixed (bar a windows update one)

what baffles me really is how people have the identical type of hardware yet run into hundreds of problems and someone else can run into none. Its always baffled me but just the way things are.

vista slow
im a musician. i run a audio program i like and it only works for xp service pack one. ive tryed upgrading, yet when i write my own music and go to record service pack 2 wont let me, claims its a copywrite issue !
this is basicaly what vista is doing as well. i can upload my own songs ive written and recorded to that unit, but the burner wont let me burn cd's or dvd's.
ive worked in tech areas for many years, and it takes a lot to make me scratch my head but this vista and compaq situation sure beat me.
like i said above i put xp pro on and basicaly have the computer running good, just a couple drivers im still looking for.

i use cubase, reason and other various programs and i havent ran into a issue yet all working fine, if it came with vista then the machine must be capable of it f it has came as standard brand new out the shop.

Very strange really but you have downgraded back to xp so this topic really isnt any use now.

Shame you couldnt stay on vista

I don't know how much of your original problem might have been due to the Antivirus option that your system probably came with -- but if you installed Norton or McAfee -- uninstalling it would have made a sigificant difference -- especially in boot up.

Vista can also take a few days to settle down. It took 2 days for Outlook to finish indexing the imported data files. Vista also indexes for the search, at first it runs for a while. I wish there was a feature to pause all the indexing, it slow things down too much when installing a new machine.

Ensure your motherboard BIOS is up-to-date. My system (ASUS mobo) ran incredibly slowly until I did that. In terms of getting drivers I would go to the original equipment manufacturers sites rather than dell. It can take a long time for an driver / BIOS upgrade to filter down to the dell site.

first, try to install all programs with right click and "run as administrator" selection ...

second, vista searches and indexes all folders and files for documents, pictures and any other filetypes for "fast searching" and it also does that for outlook or windows mail files and databases ... when i was installed the vista ultimate for the first time, it tooks 1 week to complete the searching and indexing process and vista always slows down when doing this ...

after completed searching and indexing, everything runs quick and fine ...

i was in beta team of windows vista from the first time and *believe in me* this is the fastest one ... they cutted lots of things from original one and it was so slow ...

You can also speed up Vista by disabling unneeded services.
