Solved: removing IE, WMP
How does one de-select, remove built in Windows components?

I thought the European Union forced Microsoft to give Windows users that option.

In the control panel, I have found "programs & features" > turn Windows features on & off.

Thanks for your help.

What happens when you try to turn Windows components off this way?

Which way?

Do you mean cp > p & f > turn . . . ?
IE7 & WMP are not listed.
Sorry I didn't make that clear.

Two Choices ... if I understand the question ???

1) Don't use them and Ignore them.
2) Add/Remove >> Add/Remove Windows Components >> .. and uncheck them.
.. or both.

Thanks for the screen shot of XP.

Life in not the same on Planet Vista.
There is no "add / remove programs" in Vista. It has been replaced by "Programs & Features"
From which "Turn Windows Features on & off" is available.

IE is not listed. Nor is WMP.

I'm so discouraged by Vista ... I removed my Vista drive.
Looks like your limited to Choice one.

In control panel, default programs, you can remove access to ie7, media player, and media center under the Set program access and computer defaults > custom selection.

Thanks.

Will de-selecting "enable access to this program" uninstall IE7, WMP?

The anti-trust law suit didn't prevent Microsoft from including these items with Windows. It only allowed OEMs to include other programs as replacements to be the default. With Windows, these programs are literally a part of the operating system. There's no way to completely remove them, and I really don't see the point in trying. You need IE to download Microsoft updates or otherwise access certain MS content. As for WMP, just don't use it, and delete any shortcuts to it if it really bugs you. I wouldn't mess with system components. There's no benefit yet some risk.
