Group Policy help pls
Hello , I am trying to understand the group policy thing i am trying to turn off windows firewall but it says 'for your security some settings are controlled by group policy.

I've run through that list and still can't get the settings I want.If someone is very good with this and also access denied popups , I am the only person using computer and I am admin, some help will be very welcomed.

Are you an administrator on this computer?

Using the Group Policy Editor

* Click Start, type GPEDIT.MSC and press ENTER. This opens the Group Policy Editor.
* Navigate to the following branch:

Computer Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Performance Control Panel

* Double-click Turn off access to the performance center core section
* Set it to Not configured

If it's already set to Not Configured, set it to Enabled and click Apply. Then revert back the setting to Not Configured. This resets the registry based policy if set already.

* Repeat the steps in this branch as well:

User Configuration | Administrative Templates | System | Performance Control Panel

* Exit the Group Policy Editor.

Note: Group Policy Editor is not available in certain versions of Windows Vista. If your version of Windows Vista does not have the Group Policy Editor, follow the registry editing method instead, which is listed below.

If you can't change them then your account is not an Administrator.

What's the history of this computer?
Did you buy it new from a manufacturer? Or used online?
It sounds like someone, or some company, may have had it before and made various configuration changes.

In the Group Policy Editor, check the settings in:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Network Connections\Windows Firewall

Protect all network connections would be a good one to look at first.

It is a few years old I did a fresh install of Vista , I am the only one using it and I am admin by my standards, I guess the machine doesn't see it that way.

The group policy editor is not configured for the firewall option of what u mentioned, is there something else I need to change.
I had vista manager running before this maybe that screwed with my settings?

So you're running Windows Vista? That probably changes things a bit as I doubt many people here have worked with Group Policy on Windows Vista. It seems especially odd that you performed a format and clean install of Vista and immediately had this problem.

What version of Vista are you running? As for Vista Manager, any tweaking program has the potential of causing problems that can be difficult to troubleshoot. If you weren't experiencing this problem before using it, I'd say that's your problem. The difficulty is in determining exactly what you changed and undoing it. In the case of tweaking apps, this can be difficult, if not impossible, to resolve.

It has been several weeks since install and I would say it could be the vista manager program that has done changes.
What I did was turn the firewall off altogether, it is a resource hogger anyways.

I had that problem aswell!!!....To fix it (after a day of searching and trial + error+going round in circles!) click on start..type run, gpedit, then click on computer configuration/windows settings/security settings/windows firewall/ then another windows firewall will appear with a icon...on this right click then you will be given some options....in these options click on clear policy....wahhay!!!!!! fixed!!!!!!!!!!
