Is the Vista upgrade machine specific?
Hi there,

A few weeks ago, I purchase a brand new Acer laptop with Windows XP already installed. I am entitled to a Vista upgrade which I would have to order online. I am not sure I want to install Vista on that particular laptop as it is not very powerful. On the other hand, maybe I shouldn't pass on the opportunity to get the upgrade for so little money.

My question is this: if I were to get that Vista upgrade, am I to understand that it is machine specific and that it will install only on that particular Acer Notebook or may I assume that I could install it on any PC running XP ?

Thanks for any insight

Acer is the only one who can answer that. Needless to say if it's a Ms Vista cd well that can be used for any pc, but if it's an Acer restore disk, then it will only be for an Acer pc.

I did E-mail them. That was a week ago yesterday. Honestly, I am not expecting an answer from them. I figured my chances were way better here.

Hopefully, someone would have tried what I am suggesting and reported wether it works or not here.

Thanks.

Good to know you can actually get Acer Laptops with XP !!!
I'll make some calls to a local supplier and try and remember to get back to you on that.

Calling them was last resort. I'm in Montreal, Canada. I was trying to avoid making such a looooong distance phone call.

I am not going to pursue this. Last night, I noticed that they've upped the price from 60 to 90$ Also, there might be extras like shipping charges and/or taxes and/or customs fees. What sounded like a good deal is becoming not such a good deal after all.

Thanks for your help.

Yes it is an upgrade. But not a free upgrade. There seemed to be something like ~$5 for shipping

They also have e-mail you can use if you would like instead of a long distance phone call.

I did send them an E-mail. That was something like ten days ago. I am not holding my breath.

Thanks to all who wrote in.

Apologize for not calling the local company that sells Acers to get some information for you. Had the sunniest day this year. Me and the dog went for a long hike in the mountains.

I'll do it tomorrow for you.

Hey Bob,

Don't bother. As I said earlier, I'm not going to pursue this. The deal is just not a deal after all. The Vista upgrade, bought in a store, is almost the same as this "deal" so it's just not worth it. Also, the deadline is March, 30th...

Thank you for your time guys.
