I would hope in five years that managed to write some new code!

Some of the code is the same, but there is a lot of new stuff and different structure under the hood.

So then is Vista based on the NTFS file system, or does it have a new file system? And I guess Vista does not have the same type NT kernal as XP, but mayby just improved version of that?

A lot of work went into separating drivers from the ring-0 kernel code so that a bad driver doesn't bring the whole system down. There are tons of little and large changes from XP. I think there's a page somewhere on the Microsoft site that talks about the "under the hood" changes from XP.
