Seriel to USB Cable - Unknown Device
I recently purchased a Dell XPS410 that came preloaded with Vista. I did not realize that it did not have a serial port so I bought a serial to USB Cable. I am connecting a HP LJ6P.

The first time I connected the cable everything came up fine and I was able to print....until yesterday. It showed up in device manager under USB as an unknown device. I was able to fix it yesterday by uninstalling, disconnecting and rebooting. The problem has returned and I cannot get it to work again.

I was searching the web for info on this and what I found was an issue with USB and the computer going to sleep. After thinking about it I believe that that is when my problem started.

The "solution" was to disable legacy USB support in the BIOS(?). I do not have that option. I can disable any of the 3 USB Buses but there is no legacy USB option.

Can anyone get me back to square one with this? I am not even sure this is a Vista only issue.

Thanks.

Dave

No, this was a problem with XP also. The fix is the same. Go to your Device Manager. (WinKey + Pause/Break key will get you there faster.) Click on Device Manager, then click on the plus next to Universal Serial Bus controllers (all the way at the bottom).

For each USB Root Hub, you will need to right-click and select Properties. Select the Power Management tab. Uncheck the first box.
