Angry Vista tells me 'No audio output device installed'
I have a HP Pavilion dv8000 laptop that I bought in Oct. and they gave me a free upgrade for Vista for. I recently installed it and It is not registering any type of sound deivce in the laptop at all. The volume icon in the tool tray on the start bar has a red X over it, and when you hover over it it say 'No audio output device installed'. I have tried installing the drivers off the HP site, but nothing has worked. Any advice? It's been 3 weeks and it's driving me crazy.

I do not own that model, but have read on other sites of the several problems involving HP products with Vista. Among these is the sound. I understand that if you go to a driver site, (Sound Blaster particularly) the Sound Blaster Pro drivers should work.

I had a simalar problem with my HP. If the drivers seem to be working correctly you might want to check the administrator tool services. Check to see if windows audio or one of its dependancies is turned off. I don't know how it happens but mine got turned off and turning it to automatic and starting it fixed the sound

I made sure the widows audio was started and on automatic. I even stopped it and started it to make sure and it didn't work. Any other ideas? I'm really out of choices at this point; though I am trying to find a sound blaster driver.

Does it show what model of sound device it is? Is it built on the board or a seperate card? If it is a seperate card then the make and model should be on it. If it is a sound blaster then go to www.creative.com to find your driver. I know that my Dell with a SB Live 5.1 Digital said that was at the end of life and didn't have any Vista drivers. (even though they used to have a beta version on their site before Vista was officially released). I did a google search and found one that worked.

Just thought I would note that I took it to guy to fix it and all I needed was to download a chip set from the HP site for my sound card. Hope that helps anyone with the same problem

Vista's hardware support for older items (that means stuff that was released more than 2 years ago) is HoPeLeSs. Your sound card may be just too old for vista. I don't know why HP provided a free vista upgrade for hardware that wasn't fully compatible with it. You could get a cheap USB sound card...

My Solution
I just ran into this problem on my dv2000 after installing the new Vista updates. My solution ended up being to just reinstall the sound....Here's what I did...

1. Start>>Control Panel
2. Click "Classic View" on the left pane
3. Open "Device Manager"
4. Under "Sound Video and game controllers" right click on "Conexant High Definition Audio" and click on "Uninstall"
5. If it asks you if you want to delete the drivers, select "No"

That was pretty much it...about 10 seconds after it uninstalled it recognized the card again automatically, installed it, and then everything was working fine.

If it doesn't recognize it automatically, maybe try right clicking on "Sound Video and game controllers" and select "Scan for hardware changes".

I hope this helps...

Thumbs up Thank You So Much!!
Thank you so much!! I had to register with this site just to thank you!! It would have taken me a couple of days to think of re-installing the Device... Probably weeks, seeing as how my music helps me think...
