Cool Freezing
I really don't know if this is a Vista problem or not but if someone could help me figure this out I would be greatful. My new computer keeps freezing up. Everything will be going along just fine and then wamo the thing just freezes. There is no special event that tirgers it and there is never an error message.

My hijack this file follows:

I've had a Vista laptop for about 3 weeks now, and mine has started doing that as well. 3 days ago I had to do a hard reboot with the engineer switch (Power button) and somehow corrupted the system. It wouldn't even boot up in safe mode, so I tried to restore it to my last known good point. I kept getting disk errors, so I went back and restored to the factory settings from Gateway. Had to uninstall all the crap and reinstall my software. Very annoying. Then tonight, computer started freezing again. Only error message I got was COM bad.

there seems to be an issue with Creatives X-fi vista driver, in particular
the file CTXFISPI.EXE

all it does is detect for headphones being plugged in, so you can disable it

if you check under vistas Performance and Information tools/Advance tools
you will probably see the message in the link below.
(about halfway down the post there is a screenshot of it)
this may well be contributing to the problem

I have done some more digging, cos Im experiencing the same problem.

It seems the root cause of this X-fi problem is that it doesnt do a very good job of sharing
IRQs especially if its sharing an IRQ with a graphics card.

Apparently this lack of IRQ sharing also manifests itself through the speakers as
hissing/crackling. So if you have also heard that then it could to point to an IRQ share
conflict

Under vista it seems the only way to change the irq that the x-fi is using is to install
it into a different PCI slot.

Ideally the PCI slot that is the most likely not to share IRQs is the first one ie the one right
under your graphics card. Making it very difficult to use, in even single graphic card
systems. Its impossible in SLI systems.

I checked mine and it was sharing an IRQ.

I moved the X-fi up the PCI slot 2, it was in the bottom PCI slot, even though the X-fi card
is the only PCI card in my system. On reboot both the graphics and X-fi are sharing IRQs
with USB ports, so I dont know if that will be an improvement.

I will have to test it

Man that makes a ton of sence now. I have had head phones plugged in to a usb port since I built the system. The other day I needed to use the speakers and I unpluged the headphones and haven't pluged them back in yet and it hasn't froze up once since.

Very Interesting

Well I can confirm by eliminating the IRQ share conflict with the graphics
card, it has fixed the problem.

The problem I was having was in the new game Lord of the rings online.

My vista system hadnt crashed once since I installed vista on it,
then playing lotro caused it crash a dozen times in one day.

As a temporary workaround I turned of hardware 3d sound and EAX in the lotro client
and that fixed the problem.

(because at the time I didnt know it, but doing that vastly reduced the amount
of work the x-fi was doing, so consequently it wasnt fighting as much with
the graphics card for bandwidth via the IRQ share)

When i learned about the IRQ share conflict and found the x-fi was sharing an IRQ with the
graphics card, Ive now moved it to a different slot and the problem has gone away.

I can use Hardware 3D sound in lotro again without it crashing every 30 mins and as a
bonus the intermittent crackling has gone.

Instead of sharing an IRQ with each other, both graphics card and x-fi are sharing IRQS
with USB2 Host controllers. Unfortunately I was unable to get the x-fi exclusive use of one
but as long as it doesnt share with the graphics, it should be ok.

I also noticed in the hijack the file you are using Itunes, there are compatibility issues with vista and itunes
the apple site says that itunes version 7.1.1 addresses a lot of those problems.
link below
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305042

which version of X-fi do you have, cos CL have issued some new vista drivers for the x-fi
http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/downloads/

The options on the link above are a bit confusing as they have x-fi drivers on both
the X-fi option and Soundblaster option. The older versions of x-fi have been listed
under Soundblaster.

cheers
