I dual boot with Windows XP Pro, and Windows Vista Ultimate.
On the Windows XP Pro HHD, I have no problems at all. The OS runs better than Lance Armstrong.
On the Windows Vista HHD, I have more problems than, well, I can't think of anything politically correct to compare it to. So I'll just explain in detail.
I did all the pre-release tests and everything with Vista, with the same hardware I have now, and never once had a problem, that's why I decided to go out and buy it.
Well, go figure, the final release would have more bugs in it than the beta's and pre-release clients.
First off; I get more blue screens per day than I can count on my fingers and toes. And it's random. I might be chatting online, playing a game, or idle.
Most of them are:
IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS
PFN_LIST_CORRUPT
BAD_POOL_CALLER
REFERENCE_BY_POINTER
Now, everyone tells me to run memtest. Okay... 12 hours later, no errors.
I ran the Windows Memory tester; NOTHING!
I've updated the drivers on the motherboard, the video card, everything! Still get errors.
I've installed old beta drivers that I used back in the pre-releases; still get errors.
I've flashed the BIOS back to the factory release, and than to the new one, still get errors.
Now, I've tried to duplicate the errors. Meaning, torture the computer into crashing. So I downloaded this program called Prime95. Which just beats the crap out of it, didn't crash.
I have also tried a different sound card; nope. I'm using a different PCI NIC; nope. And I am disabling the ones on the motherboard before using the PCI ones. I have the serial ports, and LPT ports and everything that I'm not using disabled. The only USB devices I have hooked up are the keyboard and mouse, and I've boughten new of those and changed them out.
NOW! The only solution to stopping the crashes, kinda, that I've had so far, is disabling the swap file. That works, so far.
Now, everyone is thinking it's a hard drive issue. No, I've went out and bought new hard drives. I've went out and bought new ram, had the ram I was using replaced, replaced the motherboard, you name, I've replaced it.
And all while this is going on, my Windows XP is laughing.
The only software that I run in the background is:
AVG Antivirus
MSN Messenger
APC PowerChute for the UPS
ATI Control Center
If anyone has ANY suggestions, please let me know. Cause I've tried everything. If you want to see a copy of one of the many minidumps that I've collected, just let me know. | | Senior Member with 703 posts. | | Join Date: Oct 2002 Location: Quebec | | What software did you run on the betas? If you're having apparent hardware issues, with the same hardware, check the voltage/temperatures. None of those error messages are new to Vista. Are you using the vista version of APC? http://www.apcc.com/resource/include...0&tab=Software
Have you disabled startup programs to test what it might be? | | Junior Member with 5 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Indiana Experience: Advanced | | Quote: |

Have you disabled startup programs to test what it might be? | Well, I'll try running msconfig and disabling the startup programs. The only problem is, is that there isn't anything that starts up. Just Windows Defender, AVG, MSN Messenger, APC, and CCC (ATI CONTROL CENTER). Unless there's a background service thats running that is causing the crashes, but I wouldn't know what one to disable.
Yes, I have the vista version of APC. | | Junior Member with 5 posts. | | Join Date: Apr 2007 Location: Indiana Experience: Advanced | | Well...
I installed on an old IDE harddrive, and before the desktop even finished loading, I got a bluescreen...
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_EQUAL_OR_LESS
I have no idea what caused this one. No programs installed yet. Wasn't even connected to the internet. No USB devices attached, nothing. | THIS THREAD HAS EXPIRED.
