Vista and Audacity compatibility problems
Hello,

I recently bought a computer with Windows Vista, and now Audacity doesn't seem to be able to record streaming audio--all I see is a flat line. (It worked fine when I had XP) I've tried the new Beta version of Audacity 1.3, as well as 1.2.6 and Audacity Portable, with no success. For Playback and Recording, I first tried Microsoft Sound Mapper (Input and Output), then I tried Speakers SigmaTel Definition CODEC and Rear Mic SigmaTel CODEC for playback and recording (which correspond to my working devices under the toolbar). No luck. I also downloaded a new SigmaTel driver off the Dell update page.

Any suggestions? I'd really appreciate any advice that others can provide--it's been very frustrating trying to get Audacity to work with Vista. Thanks much.

Welcome to the TSG forum.

Don't think they want us to record what we play anymore.

In my Vista hp .... Sound mapper is missing also.
In the newer audio systems ... Stereo Mix is missing.
Can you select line input as a recording source ... or is it missing also ???

Line input
Unfortunately, Line In cannot be selected as a recording device... My computer lists it as "currently unavailable." Thanks for replying, though.

You'll have to load the sound drivers for your Dell ...

Sounds the same as this problem ...

Sound drivers
Sorry, I'm a little unclear on this point... can you elaborate a bit more? I've been to the Dell website to download the Audio Driver for SigmaTel. Are there other sound drivers I need, and if so, where can I find them?

Not really sure what Porsche911C installed.
But I'm thinking the SigmaTel software should be all you need.

Porsche911C didn't mention if this loaded the Stereo mix ... and/or ... the M$ sound mapper ...
to allow recording what your computer is playing.

I have a HP .. Which has Vista problems of its own.

Aint M$ really nice

Recording problems and Vista
Well, I sorry to say that I can not help you further.

I had a clean installed Vista on a new computer.

I booted the system and it did about 5 upgrades automatically, rebooted...did another 22 or so updates, rebooted and then I installed Audacity.

First i tried setting the correct devices in both vista and audacity.

Then I tried running audacity in XP and in W2k compatibility modes.

Then I found the link mentioned above.

Set the newly found device and then......then there was sound!
