Arrow same problem... kind of..
hi everyone, I have the same problem with my HP Pavilion dv6548ea, bought it back in June'07. I had a chat with HP representative:

Nelson: Welcome to HP Total Care for Pavilion Notebooks. My name is Nelson, how may I assist you today?
zarooch: Hi Nelson
zarooch: Hi Nelson, I'm having problems with my CD/DVD drive
Nelson: Oh,I'm really sorry to know that, however I'll do my best to resolve the issue.
zarooch: I have a HP Pavilion dv6548ea
Nelson: Could you please let me know the exact issue you are facing with the Notebook?
zarooch: I bought it on 17th June 2007
zarooch: now I haven't really used it that much as I don't use my laptop for entertainment purposes
zarooch: the problem is that when I insert a CD or a DVD it takes more time than normally it would take it to read the media
zarooch: and it sounds like it gets stuck and then it spins again and then again it stucks and spins again and after several times it finally reads the disc or doesn't
zarooch: I'm also having issues while burning CD/DVD
zarooch: after the burning is complete it tries to verify the data and it fails while doing
zarooch: I've burned like 10 DVDs maximum until now
zarooch: and haven't really used it for playback/reading CD/DVDs
zarooch: so what should I do now?
Nelson: Thank you for the information.
Nelson: Is the operating system installed in the notebook is vista?
zarooch: yes
Nelson: Have you tried any troubleshooting steps regarding the issue?
zarooch: no
zarooch: like what they should be? I've gone through the FAQ and this issue isn't mentioned there
zarooch: looks like the drives needs cleaning or replacement?
zarooch: but how come it gave up so early? I wans't really expecting it to do it so early and like this?
zarooch: does cd/dvd drive comes under warranty?
Nelson: Alright
Nelson: No need to worry I will try my best to fix the issue.
Nelson: To assist you better, please let me know the following information: Model Number: Product Number: Serial Number: The Model, Product and Serial number is located on a white sticker, called the Service Tag, underneath the Notebook.
zarooch: Product: HP Pavilion dv6500, S/N: **********, P/N: ***********

Nelson: If the issue persists I suggest you to try by remove and reseating the drive manually
zarooch: I see, I've noted down all the instructions mentioned above, but I suspect the problem to be hardware related instead of a driver issue
zarooch: but anyway, I'll do it as instructed. What should I do if the problem presists even after reseating the drive manually?
Nelson: Here is the weblink regarding the manual
Nelson: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00737799.pdf
Nelson: Please do not click on the link instead, Just copy and paste the entire link onto the address bar of your browser and press ENTER Key.
Nelson: Refer to the Optical drive: 110 of 233 for removing and reseating the drive manually
Nelson: For your convenience I will send the chat transcript to your email address
zarooch: I see...what should I do if the problem still presists even after reseating the drive manually?
Nelson: I suggest you to contact nearest local service center and replace the drive.
zarooch: does comes under warranty? replacement? or will I have to purchase the replacement drive?
Nelson: As the notebook is in warranty the drive must be repalced for free of cost
zarooch: alright, now I have answers to all of my questions, great!
zarooch: thanks for your help and assistance. I appreciate your effort.

Basically it is what all the previous post suggest. The last one is to reseat the drive. Hope this helps or adds something..

Regards,
zarooch.

Thanks, Zarooch. I can use that manual in case I ever need to pull the HD or DVD drive.

By the way, the push button on the DVD drawer broke and I have to use a paper clip or the eject command to open it Would HP will send me a new drive under warranty?

I'm pretty sure that that is covered by warranty, you have to check though...
