Kensington Mouseworks on Vista
I just installed Kensington Mouseworks 6.22 on Vista and everything went fine except on reboot Mouseworks didn't think I had a Kensington mouse plugged in.

The fix is to look under Human Interface Devices in Device Manager upon reboot and update the driver for the mouse. Just point it to the folder where you extracted Mouseworks and it will load it up. Now you can use all the nice features.

When I bought this product the package only said it would work with 2000/XP but I had a feeling there was a workaround.

I need help sorting out some wierd interaction between these suspects: my trackball, pen/tablet, Vista Home Premium (which includes the tablet PC component), and ???

I'm having troublewith pen settings for my Wacom Intuos 2 graphics tablet. I want the tip of the pen to 'click', but it insists on invoking 'right click' despite the fact that the 'Wacom Tablet Properties' utility shows that the tip is set to 'click - in fact there are no other options for the tip setting.

I also have a Kensington Expert Mouse (trackball), and have checked the checkbox 'Left Handed Button Swap' in 'Kensington MouseWorks Mouse Properties.' I tried unchecking the box in case it was also effecting the tablet pen, but it didn't solve the problem.

Thanks,
Teffy

P.S. In case you are wondering how I got MouseWorks to work with Vista, it's because I found the first post in this thread - thanks!

What about the button on the pen?
What happens when you push the button that should be where your thumb rests on the pen? If you hold it down does it change anything when you push down the pen?

If the pen tip is hovering above the tablet, and I move it parallel to the tablet surface, the text underneath is selected as long as the pen button is depressed.

If I touch the pen tip to the tablet (button *not* depressed), I get the pointer 'Dynamic Feedback' symbol for 'Press the pen button'.

If I touch the pen tip to the tablet and move or tap it, I get the pointer 'Dynamic Feedback' symbol for 'Press the pen button and tap'. Behavior is the same whether or not the button is pressed.

I found the 'Dynamic feedback' symbols by looking at Control Panel, Pen and Input Devices, Pointer Options tab. Under the Pen Options tab, I see this 'Pen action' table:

Pen Action, Equivalent Mouse Action
-------------------------------------------
single-tap, single-click
double-tap, double-click
press and hold, right-click
Start Tablet PC Input Panel , none

Problem solved! The answer came from Wacom tech support:

Vista actually has lots of handwriting recognition "features" built-in - how helpful of Microsoft - but they tend to not play with the tablet that well.

You need to go into the Windows control panel and then open the Pen and Input Devices control panel.

Under the Pen Options tab highlight "Press and hold" and then click on the Settings button. At the top of the window if there is a checkmark in the "Enable press and hold for right-clicking" - deselect it and click Ok.

Under the same Pen Options tab highlight "Start Tablet PC Input Panel" and click on the Settings button. If there is a checkmark in the "Enable start Input Panel gesture" box - deselect it and click on Ok.

Still under the Pen and Input Devices control panel click on the Flicks tab. If there is a checkmark in the "Use flicks to perform common actions quickly and easily" - deselect it and then click on Apply and Ok.

Close the Pen and Input Devices control panel.

I hope this helps.

I'm new on here and just wanted to thank DEREKGE for the info on how to get the Expert Mouse to work on Vista. I was about to return it to CompUSA and look for something else.. I'm glad I didn't now, it's a great trackball. Thanks again.

Your welcome bob5639.

As a sidenote, I had real problem with this mouse lately: all of the buttons would suddenly become disabled. I'd click and nothing. The only solution was to reboot - logging out, restarting mouseworks didn't work. This would happen randomly - once every week or once every two days. There was no logic to it.

I emailed Kensington Tech Support and they were great. They immediately responded by telling me they thought the mouse was defective and they would send me a new one. Because they didn't have my model in stock they offered another and said mine was on back order. I opted to wait and they sent me a in-box replacement within a few days.

Kensington is a great company and would by from them again for sure.

Not quite getting it....
I'm not quite understanding something, because I can't get Mouseworks 6.22 to see my Expert Mouse Pro. Two points I need to clarify:

1) You said to go to "Human Interface Devices" in Device Manager. I see the Expert Mouse listed under Mice, not under Human Interface Devices. Am I supposed to update the Expert Mouse under Mice? If not, then what Human Interface Device am I supposed to select?

2) You said to point it to the folder where Mouseworks was extracted. Mouseworks is dowloaded as a zip file, then extracted, then installed. Did you mean point it to the folder where it is installed or the folder where the components were extracted from the zip?

thanks!

1) First make sure you have the down loaded file extracted to a folder (desktop or any other convenient location of your choice).

2) Now go to the "Human Interface Devices" in the Device Manager You won't see the Kennsington drivers here but you need to put them here, so just direct a path to the extracted files in the folder you created. Reboot and that should do it.

Question I have the Kensington TurboBall 5 button trackball on Vista
I have tried the workaround on Vista for MouseWorks but I can still not get Mouseworks to open or see any Kensington devices. HELP PLEASE!

I can see in Device Manager under "Mice and other Pointing Devices" my "Kensington HID TurboBall" but I read in your post that I should update the driver under "Human Interface Devices." There are several items under "HID" I have (3) "HID-compliant consumer control device" entries, I also have (4) "HID-compliant device" entries and (4) "USB Human Interface Device" entries. Do I need to update a driver on any of these as well? If so, how do I tell which one(s) to update?? I can not believe Kensington is leaving us Loyal customers hanging out in the wind like this!

Thanks for the help in advance,

MARK

Mark, What drivers come with the Turboball? --- Is it Mouseworks 6.22? If it's not I'm not sure that it would be the same but lets give it a try anyway. Sounds like you need to determine first which driver in the HID that needs the update. You should be able to do this by checking the properties of each. If you find a driver listed there that is no longer needed from a previous device I would delete it and this would also help to determine which one to upgrade. When this is determined point it to the folder that contain the unzipped drivers to update it. Then go back to the device drivers after a reboot and see if there is a new device pertaining to Kensington. If there is then the buttons on the mouse should be active and ready to program. Hope this helps and let me know with a responce.

Expert Mouse and Vista
When I try to install Mouseworks driver using device manager it tells me that current driver is up to date and does not load new driver.

Help Please, I can't imagine life without my expert mouse. I get neck and shoulder pain using conventional mouse.

kensington mouse
you need to do exactly what the guy above said, and read it several times, put all the files in a folder and locate the human interface device in vista's device manage and hightlight one of the usb lines and tell it the install the drive from a specifted source and keep doing it for each one until vista see the driver and installs it.

I gotta tell ya I'm still having problems...
I took ray00741's advice and followed bob5639's instructions and STILL nothing. WHAT I STILL DON'T GET is how do you "direct a path to the extracted files in the folder you created?" Can someone explain this in "layman's" terms step by step? I'm not that technical (nor am I that uneducated) to get this stuff. Heck I was finally able to get Microsoft's Strategic Commander working the same way in Vista, so I know I can do this. By the way I did do what ray00741 said and I manually went into each HID and changed it the way I was supposed to manually, but when I executed one of the HID's it made my Kensington Expert Mouse (Trackball) stop working all together. I had to unplug it and plug it to another USB port to make it work again. THIS HAS BEEN A TOUGH ROAD PEOPLE!!! I hope someone can truly take the time and go step by step and thoroughly explain this in FULL detail. BELIEVE ME, I will (and so will everybody else) TRULY APPRECIATE what anyone can do to make this happen so we can finally get back to using our awesome trackballs !!! We will be waiting... Thank you...
