hello GSDlady, its definately worth installing xp if your used to using it,it wont be no easy way to do this as drivers will be needed for xp for your gateway pc to run correctly, typical problems will be sound drivers, lan driver, wifi driver but do not despare most drivers will be available on gateway website sometimes the exact model pc wont be listed but i have tried close to model numbers and had success, lastly xp/xp pro sp2 will need to be full working version, the disc you have will prob.not be full as most opp. systems come pre-installed on pc.
hope this helps.simon.

Thank you ever so much. I did discover that XP was originally on this unit and Vista was an upgrade. Does that make a difference? Maybe I should just suck it up, buy the XP and let the Geek Squad at Best Buy do the removal/installation for $129.00. I use to be able to do these things, but now I question my abilities. Thank you again and haved a nice rest of the weekend.

Going from VISTA to XP
Here's my experience with this issue with Dell and Gateway. Dell tried to sell me a pretty expensive system with VISTA even though I made it clear I wanted XP pro. According to Dell, all I would have to do is uninstall VISTA, then install XP pro, which they would graciously sell me for $300+ bucks. Dell reps said it would be really simple and all I had to do was make back ups of the software I wanted to keep and use with XP. Yeah right! Something in my gut told me to do more research and that is how I landed here. Sounds like this would be an almost impossible task to complete without being really knowledgeable. Gateway basically told me I was nuts to want XP since Microsoft would no longer support XP after June. I have VISTA on my laptop and hate it!!! Also, the company I am going to work for does not support VISTA, so XP is a must and it now looks like I will have to limp along on my old system with XP. Bottom line, thanks for being here. You all just saved me a bunch of $'s and a TON of frustration!

Just purchased new Compaq with VISTA
I can't wait to get rid of Vista. I hate it!
It won't even show me the files in a directory after typing *.*
I am going to FDISK the HD, format it and then install XP.
I assume the problems will start when the XP drivers won't be compatible with the hardware.
I'll report back after I've tried everything!

Why this thread is still going?
Because:
a) I have just expereinced Vista by buying a notebook with Vista installed already.
b) My google request for "can I replace Vista with XP"
- this thread comes up first.
c) I had heard that Vista had a lot of problems.
d) I wanted to add my two cents worth.
e) I wanted to find if anyone has replaced Vista with XP on a notebook successfully
f) How they did it
g) Did they experience any problems?
h) How did they solve thos problems?
Isn't that enough reason for the thread to continue?

don't make duplicate accounts. It's against the rules. especially just to "prove" (as if) a point. now I'm leaving this thread. good day.
