Solved: Internet works, Downloads slow.
Hi

I've been searching for the whole week. I checked with my ISP, and looked for a mysterious RWIN entry. My problem is, I can only download files at tops of 50kbs. My internet is slower than it should be, but ok.This is the same on multiple websites. And its not my ISP, because my laptop on the same network works like a charm. Any ideas?

I know I'm not supposed to double post, but I found some more info on my prob that may be helpful.

My ISP came out to my house and the connection is fine. My laptop with XP runs the internet perfect. I am trying to download a 1mb file, and it has timed out. Max download speeds are now about 100 BYTES/SEC. I noticed that manual rWin doesn't work in Vista. Also, my internet is also slow. Sites like YouTube and image heavy sites also take a long time. Imagine, dial up v3. About 120kbs. Any idea on how to fix this?

How about you start with the make/model of the broadband modem and router. Also, please visit www.speakeasy.net/speedtest and run their speed test. Pick the site closest to your location. Finally, what is your contracted download/upload speed?

Turn off the antivirus for a few minutes and surf where you know it's safe, like here. Is it still slow?

Go to broadband reports: http://www.dslreports.com/tools and take BOTH Tweak & Speed test.

PcPitstop.com complete testing may help... IF you create free account, test will provide that number you seek.

Lastly, i've seen some firewalls get so in the way that disabling them does not help, in extreme cases uninstall with complete wipe is the only solution...although that doesn't likely seem to be the cause of your problem.

Also, i would reset BOTH router AND modem with a pin, leave off for close to a minute, turn back on. Latest firmware might help too.

What are you having the problem with? Is this a desktop or laptop and what brand or hardware installed? No one can answer you without this info. Is this new or did it just start happening? Have you run online scans for spyware and virus.
I would like www.ewido.net
www.bitdefender.com so we can rule those out....could also be ethernet card or driver for same issue. Is your ethernet onboard and if so what board?

@horsecharles

And the tweak test gave me this,
"* Downloading file of size 1024000: Failed to download: Read timed out"

And the PcPitstop site didn't work.

@Rich-M
IT is a desktop PC, HP 743c. The only upgrades are a new grpahics card, two new hardrives(IDE) and another stick of 512mb Ram. This just started on Tuesday night. And no, I haven't and never run online virus/spyware scans. And my NIC is onboard.

How about trying first a basic approach to eliminate different suspects...once that's done, then you can focus more closely:

1. try different browser(preferably a Moz variant)-- IE's default security settings could be strangling things...esp. things like java/activex/scripts/conflicting/redundant popup blockers
2. check Hosts file for unusual entries
3. toggle NIC settings(half / full-duplex)
4. ¿you had 'both' windows & ZA firewalls going? ZA is the one that sometimes has issues requiring total uninstall, then re-install 'in some cases'... ¿Disabled any immunizers(spybot, spywareguard), ad-site blockers like ie-spyad, etc., email spamblockers(yes, they can cause conflicts with explorer), pop mail apps?
5. toggle auto-tuning & other settings, increase others with this: http://keznews.com/2872_Vista_Network_Helper_v1_5
6. ¿you rebooted & reflashed modem & router? ¿updated nic/lan driver? ¿tried a different cable? Just turning on/off may not do it-- may require inserting pin in tiny hole to reset, then switching off for a good 45 seconds... Speaking of-- try downloading w/o router, in a different router port...
7. Change present dns resolving w/ Treewalk: http://treewalkdns.com/downloads.htm (right-click setup file & run as administrator).

The RAM I have is compatible. WE checked that when we bought it.

@horsecharles
1.I have tried in both Firefox and IE, issue still persists
2.I have checked the hosts files, and nothin odd is in there.
3.How would I find th eNIC settings? Its onboard.
4.I took off ZA and turned off Vista Firewall. And I don't use any POP mail programs.
5.Can't get the download to work.
6.Tried all those options, still the same.
7.Will try that now.

Im not familiar with onboard nics, but if you right-click on Computer, then select Manage.
Then click on Device Manager, then on the right under Network adapter..anything there that says 10/100 or something?

If so right-click on it and select properties, there is probably a advanced tab or something, under there you can set the Speed and Duplex

Also since we are trying everything we can think of..double check to make sure the onboard nic is enabled in the BIOS or maybe if you can change some settings there

OMG! I got it fixed. I was very retarded and forgot to do something. I just checked my installed updates, and I had a update for my NIC last week. I rolled back the driver and it works faster than ever now. These are the speakeasy results!

Last Result:
Download Speed: 10615 kbps (1326.9 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1610 kbps (201.3 KB/sec transfer rate)

Thanks for the help and sorry if I caused any headaches. I forgot I had Vista set to install things automatically.

Thanks a bunch.
