Problems running games on Vista
Hello, I have a very annoying problem. I just shelled out a bunch of money for a new computer that could run all the games I have at top speed and also run up and coming games very well. But the problem is I can't get them to work!! I don't know if it is because of Vista, or if it is because of my hardware but (for example) I go to play Supreme commander and it just crashes a minuite into the game this happens with other games such as CSS and Dark Messiah. I have tried running the games in administrator mode, but that doesn't work either.

I have the AMD FX-62 processor, 2 GB of RAM, ASUS Crosshair motherboard and a 8800 GTX video card, so I really don't understand why I my games are not running. I have updated as many drivers as I possibly can, and all with vista 64 upgrades. I have tried reinstalling vista and reinstalling the drivers a couple times.

If anyone has any hints that could get me up and gaming they would be much appreciated!

I believe there is a beta set of drivers made for Vista for that display card. Have you tried them?

http://www.nzone.com/object/nzone_do...etadriver.html

And just what do you mean by "crash"?

Do you get a BSOD, an automatic reboot, a return to the desktop -- or a game specific error message?

Can you monitor the temps? It sounds like it might be overheating.

Speedfan can be used, though a bit hard to interpret at times:

http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Look for temps above 70 c and anything that jumps more than 20 degrees from a cold boot. Try to check it during a game if possible -- but there is also an option to log which can be consulted.

I got Speedfan and ran it while playing Supreme commander, and while i was in desktop core temp is around 38, as was temp 1 then during the game both temps rose, but core only by 10 degrees while temp one peaked at 55. I noticed an odd thing though, I was playing with the game windowed so it crashed a few times, but I could ctrl + alt +del and get to task manager, then the game sounds would come back, and I could resume playing. This happened a few times untill it had a big crash as I had experienced in the past, temp one was at 55 when it crashed.

The temps being measured would not be a problem then.

This sounds like it might be a resource issue or conflict.

Post a HijackThis scanlog taken in "normal mode"

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Then try running these games in a "clean boot" configuration. don't disable your Display drivers -- but try disabling all other NON Microsoft startups and services and see what happens:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

Here is the log.

When I checked "hide microsoft services" there was nothing left, new computer, not alot of stuff on it. And it made no difference, it still crashed.

Another thing I notices was in the Vista "problem reports and solutions" the crashes were labeled as a "video hardwar error" and it said the problem was a "livekernelevent".

Thanks for all the help thus far!

Try uninstalling Daemon Tools:

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [DAEMON Tools] "C:\Program Files (x86)\DAEMON Tools\daemon.exe" -lang 1033

Also, I must say that I find it a little strange that HijackThis is displaying Microsoft services. Normally it doesn't do that, but I believe there is a command line means of forcing it.

What kind of power supply support do you have for that Video card? I think it's a power hungry model isn't it?

Some people get it to work, others don't.

Troll through some of these "google hits" for issues involving Vista and Daemon Tools:

Well I reinstalled vista, and didn't install daemon tools, and CSS and HL2 actually ran very well, but CSS still crashed after a while. Then I played Medieval: Total War 2 and it has crashed quite frequently, although it does look great.

I hope you still have some more things to try, maybe its at the point where I should call evga or something. Thanks alot for all your help.

Are all the crashes still just "freezes" with no error messages?

Can you see what happens with just 1 gig of ram installed -- trying alternate slots?

Also if the motherboard has an onboard graphics chip -- is it disabled in the BIOS?

Is this a dual core system? If so, I think AMD has a dual core optimizing update that you may want to look into.

I have the optimizer, there are no error messages after the crashes, just a black screen, I have tried with only one gig of ram, alternating slots, I have also tried changing the voltage and timing of my ram, no onboard graphics. Any more ideas?

Are these games run on or offline?

It does sound like a hardware problem -- but I'm surprised you never get an actual error.

Vista has a ton of diagnostic logs -- are none of them showing any errors?

Have you run chkdsk on the drive?

Are the errors just confined to one game? And have you checked for updates on those games for Vista? If you google those games with "vista" in the search string -- are you seeing anyone else with similar problems with them?
