Set Associations Control Panel
When I receive an email which has an attachment with a .pps extension, I attempt to open it and expect my PowerPoint Viewer to open an allow me to see the presentation. I receive a message "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel"

I have PowerPoint Viewer installed.

Where is the "Set Associations Control Panel" and / or how can I automatically open the .pps file?
I can open it by saving it, opening PowerPoint Viewer and then opening the .pps file.

Any help would be appreciated.

Mike

Assuming your running XP.
Go to control panel > tools > folder options > file types. Scroll down to pps file extension and associate pps with powerpoint.

Apologies HalTrout, but I didn't update my profile when changed to Vista. Your rapid reply concerned my previous OS, XP.

Since my posting, I have looked at my default program list (under Start> Control panel> Default programs> Associate a file type....) and discovered there is not a .pps extension listed. .ppt and .pot are there which concern PowerPoint. Incidentally I do not have the full version of PowerPoint, only the viewer.

Thanks again and sorry for the false information I gave.

Hi. First post here... Google sent me.

Similar problem as the person above:

Click on email attachment, click on name of attachment, get "Mail Attachment Security Warning" with 'Name', 'Publisher', 'Type'.

Says "Unknown Publisher" "Unknown File Type". Click on 'Open'.

Says "This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the Set Associations control panel."

I have followed the path laid out above: ( Start>Control panel>Default programs>Associate a file type) and there is where I'm stumped.

Where do I go from here, please.

Thank you,
Quinn

No "Associations" is required for a pps file as it is a self loading file. Note the one you have as an attachment may NOT be a real PPS file.

Thanks for your response DaveA but...

What exactly is a PPS file. I didn't refer to that and I didn't see that on my computer. It merely said 'unknown'.

Pardon my tech ignorance and anything you can contribute I would appreciate. I merely want to know if I can open this. I've recieved several emails with attachments that I haven't been able to open and I put a few of them into a folder so that I could persue this.

Thanks,
Quinn
