Cool blue screen with wireless USB adapter
Hi. this is my first post. I hope this is the best forum in which to post this. I've Googled for the solution to this with no luck.

I have a zonet ZEW2500P wireless USB adapter. I bought this adapter since it recieved excellent ratings on Newegg and was told that it had pretty good Vista drivers. I bought it to replace my DLINK usb adapter that was getting BSOD whenever I did bandwidth intensive activities. However, I still get bluescreens on the Zonet one, which leads me to believe it might be something other than my adapter. The error I am getting is DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, usually with netr70.sys or wdf01000.sys. I get crashes most frequently when I use a BitTorrent client or Google maps. I'm running Vista 32-bit and I've tried different USB ports with no luck. It also does the same thing in safe mode. I have the latest drivers for everything. Any suggestions? I can easily recreate this error. thanks

Does that motherboard have the Nvidia hardware firewall installed (Network Access Manager)?

Did you actually install the Vista drivers, or just use the disk that came with it -- which may not have had them?

http://www.zonetusa.com/DispProductD...?ProductID=139

Also, post a HijackThis scanlog:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

do you get any errors if not connected through wireless?

I would recommend a non USB version myself.

I did not bother with the driver disk that shipped with it; they were from 2004 I believe. I used the Vista drivers from the website. As far as I know, I don't have the nVidia firewall installed (it did not appear in remove program list in the control panel). I have the following nVidia drivers installed:
NVIDIA Display Driver
NVIDIA Ethernet Driver Components
NVIDIA nForce PCI System Management Driver

I have not yet had a chance to test with a wired connection.

I ran HiJack and got two errors in the process. The first one was it was unable to write to the host file. This is my second error:

An unexpected error has occurred at procedure: modMain_CheckOther1Item()
Error #75 - Path/File access error

Please email me at merijn@spywareinfo.com, reporting the following:
* What you were trying to fix when the error occurred, if applicable
* How you can reproduce the error
* A complete HijackThis scan log, if possible

Windows version: Windows NT 6.00.1904
MSIE version: 7.0.6000.16448
HijackThis version: 1.99.1

This message has been copied to your clipboard.
Click OK to continue the rest of the scan.

and this is my scanlog:

i had a chance to test using the onboard ethernet connection and I haven't gotten a bluescreen so far. So it definately seems to be an issue with the wireless adapter. Unfortunately, my computer is usually located in a place where wireless is the only option. Am I correct in assuming this is a driver issue? If so, how can I fix it?

Hard to say; if it were my problem I would try testing at various distances to see if it were an interference issue and make sure there were no competing wireless devices around.

I would also look at the onboard ethernet device and see if disabling that in the BIOS is of any help.

If none of this works I would replace the USB device with a PCI based one.

You might also look for a wireless signal booster that is compatible if it appears to be a distance problem.

disabling the ethernet adapter in the BIOS had no effect. I haven't checked the range issue, but I have an excellent signal and my laptap has no trouble connecting. I am wondering if this is a problem with my USB ports. I am also having trouble with my iPod on a USB connection. It will often fail during the sync process saying: "Disk cannot be read from or written to." However, it works fine with a FireWire connection. Are these two problems related?

Make sure you are connected directly to the port and not through any hub.

In the Device Manager you can right click on the root hubs and see which one your Wireless adapter is connected to and check the "power" tab to see what the current load is.

I doubt it's a problem with the ports themselves -- but you can uninstall these, reboot, and they will be reinstalled. It may take a couple of boots to complete it.

Before uninstalling anything, select the View tab > show hidden devices -- and that will reveal any dimmed or "non present" devices. Remove those and they should not be redetected. This can free up resources especially if there are a lot of them -- which can sometimes happen if you have installed and reinstalled many USB devices -- although usually what you will see there are "mass storage" devices that are no longer present.

There is an update from MS for IPod devices -- though I'm not sure that it applies to your exact problem, but if you haven't installed it you should anyway:

Both the iPod and the wireless adapter are connected directly to the motherboard. I also have the Windows update for iPods. I see no additional hidden USB devices in device manager. The only one that could be some is a device called "generic volume." I'm not sure what that is. I suppose I can try remove them and reinstalling but this problem has persisted even when reinstalling the OS. I suppose the last resort would be trying windows XP and seeing if I still get this problem. Otherwise, my two main USB devices are pretty much useless.

Well I'm not sure if you need to apply a registry patch to see the hidden devices. I don't recall whether I did this for Vista or not. But it is necessary in XP.

To see, download, unzip, and run the attached reg file. Then when you open the Device Manager in Vista, select "view hidden devices" and see if any dimmed entries show up. There will always be some -- although not necessarily USB ones.

Ah! The registry patch made alot of new devices appear. I uninstalled all the grayed out ones I could find. However, I tried to sync my iPod and it caused my whole system to hang. I am also still getting blue screens in internet explorer. I don't know if removing those devices helped at all. I hope it didn't make things worse.

It's not likely anything would be made worse by that unless for some reason a removed device was present and the drivers not reinstalled.

That would be indicated by a device error in the Manager. You can also go to Control Panel > Performance Information and Tools -- select the Advanced menu and run the system health diagnostic. This will inform you of any current device errors.

If you are having continuing problems with the IPod I would recommend a complete removal and reinstall.

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93976

However you can also try a System Restore; the restore can be undone if desired, by simply choosing the restore point that is created last.

Are the IE Blue Screens the same as the ones you got previously? Do you get them using another browser such as Opera (my fav) or Firefox?

I tried firefox and it hasn't given me a blue screen yet. I stil get them in IE7, but only with wireless. Ethernet is still rock solid While I don't think it solves my problem, it is interesting. Why would IE crash with wireless only? As for the iPod, again i've reinstalled the OS several times and the iPod problems persist. I've done a restore on it with no luck. (The restore fails with USB and must be done with FireWire) However, if i ever get a new iPod, they are USB only now.

About the only thing that might be different in IE are the plugins (add-ons) -- though I don't know of any that would be an issue (perhaps O2 - BHO: BitComet ClickCapture - {39F7E362-828A-4B5A-BCAF-5B79BFDFEA60} - C:\Program Files\BitComet\tools\BitCometBHO_1.1.5.19.dll).

Here's a way to test:

Open IE in the no add-ons mode through the All Programs > Accessories > System Tools Menu. Don't have any other IE window open.

I tried IE with no add-ons and it didn't seem to have any effect. For good measure, I uninstalled BitComet. Still no difference. Maybe I need to do a clean install of Vista.

Does the network diagnostics show any problems?

Also, if you boot in Safe Mode with Networking support -- any problems then?

Also if you have the phishing filter enabled in IE -- try disabling that.
