Solved: Laptop Does not turn off after shutdown
Hello,

I have Vista business installed on my toshiba tecra A4 laptop. However, the laptop is vista compatible, when I did a fresh install, I had to repair to remove pcmcia.sys driver file to start vista. Now, whenever I shutdown my laptop, the OS does shutdown and the screen goes black, but the laptop remains switched on. It never turns off. I left the laptop on for whole night, but to no avail.

anyone having a solution or any idea why this happens .. and any workaround??
Thanks.

Check out this Microsoft Vista Forum for some possibilities...Nvidia drivers can be highly problematic and you will see that here:

The link says this:
Redownloaded and reinstalled the latest motherboard and chipset drivers from Intel and Gigabyte.
However, most of the discussions over there are relevent to nVidea drivers.Mine is ATI on a ttoshiba Tecra A4.
But still I'll try to upgrade the drivers. Can you send me the links for these downloads ??
Thanks.

You say the laptop is Vista compatible, yet the Toshiba support site has no Vista drivers for the A4 that I can see?

Without compatible drivers, I forsee problems...

Thats where I looked for you, the A4 is not shown as having any Vista drivers?

The supported models (copied from that site) in the Tecra range are:

Tecra A6-S513, A6-EZ6311, A6-EZ6314, A6-EZ6313, A6-EZ6312, A6-S713, A6, A6-ST3512, A6-ST3112, A7-S712, A7-ST5112, A7-S612, A8-S8314, A8-EZ8311, A8-EZ8412, A8-S8414, A8-EZ8413, A8-EZ8411, A8-EZ8312, A8-ST3612, A8-EZ8313, M4, M4-S115TD, M4-S315, M4-S635, M4-S335, M4-S415, M4-S435, M5-S433, M5-ST8112, M5-S4331, M5-S5331, M5-ST1412, M5, M6-ST3412, M6-EZ6611, M6-EZ6612, M7-S7331, M7, M7-ST4013, M7-S7311, S3, S3-S411TD

I don't see any A4 in the list above.

On the A4 driver pages there are no Vista drivers that I could see.

Just where are you looking?

Well,
Not really!
I understand that the model is not listed there. But when you download the drivers, quiet a few of them when run, will tell you they are for tecra A4 as well.

And as per Toshiba what applies to Satellite M series .. it applies to tecra A4 as well.

BTW, I could install and am running Vista without a hitch (except of course after deleteing or renaming PCMCIA.sys file after installtion), only this damn SHUTDOWN thing does not seem to go well on my system.

But just where do Toshiba actually state that the Tecra A4 is Vista compatible?

The video drivers are just one small part of the required compatability.

Sure it may run, but the issues that may arise could have roots deeper than just the video drivers.

I understand, Toshiba never said Tecra A4 was vista compatible. But few of the driver downloads also mention that this driver update is for tecra A4 as well even if it's meant for vista.Secondly, the vista compatibilty test with vista advisor did not show me any error and it showed the syatem was capable. The vista Experience index is 2.9 for my system, just because the RAM is 512 MB, otherwise the rest of the indexes are b/w 3.6 to 4.1.

Here's where I need your input as there may be similarity, but I don't know what is installed on your notebook. What type of ATi software is installed other than video driver on your system? I had an ATi chipset desktop and I can't remember if it had similar worthless software compared to the Nvidia software that might cause the same problems.
Why not go ionto "Run,msconfig,ok,startup" and uncheck everything and reboot, then see if it will shut down. If it does you know that something in startup is causing this. Have you installed any new Norton or Kaspersky programs recently?

And just to mention some more details, I have tried updating all of these drivers but windows finds all of them up-to-date. Here is a screenshot of few more drivers which windows had kept hidden:
