Question No option to rollback driver
Hi! I upgraded to Vista on Friday. I have a fiber connection, and have always experienced great download speeds......but Vista is SO SLOOOOOOOOOOOWW. I followed your advice, and was going to rollback my driver, because mine is dated 1/26/2007 and the version is 6.103.126.2007. However, the rollback button is grayed out. I went to Reatek site (I have model rtl8139), and downloaded the most current driver for Vista dated June 2007. I am going to try that one, but in the meantime, does anyone have a 2006 driver?

Thanks,

Kathy

I have exactly the same problem as Kathy above. I can't rollback to the previous driver because the button is greyed out. I did a clean install of Vista rather than an upgrade - perhaps that has something to do with it??

I've tried downloading the driver from various websites, but my connection is sooo slow the download times out. Can anyone help??

I have the same problem, I can't click on the roll back button and I have tried to uninstall and install an old one I have found but once I uninstall it automatically updates and installs the newest driver.

Can anyone help??

Also has anyone got the 2006 driver that did work just in case the one I found doesn't work, if you have a link that would be appreiated

Hi Salanddaz,

I had the same problem. There's a newer version of the driver (6.104) available from Realtek. You can find it at the following link:

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...&GetDown=false

Look for the "Auto installation program (support Vista 64 and Vista)", Version 6.104. I downloaded and installed the newer version and it seems to have fixed all the problems.

I intially had problems downloading the installation file - the download speed was so slow it kept timing out. I installed a download manager (Download Accelerator Plus) available from http://www.speedbit.com and then managed to download and install the new driver.

Done it and it has solved the problem, done a speedtest and my speed has doubled since I updated. My internet is slow anyway as our phone line can only provide 512kb due to us being so far from the local exchange but it now seems superfast compared to the dial up speed I was experiencing

Thank you

Broke Record
Having the same prob as everyone else on this thread except I'm using a wireless Linksys WMP54G. My wireless XP system has great internet speed, my XP laptop has great internet speed and this Vista machine was working okay for a while. Problem has been getting worse. The facts:

Machine is a new build with Quad Processor, 4 gig Ram, Vista Ultimate x64, etc
I have used IE 7, Opera, Fox and all are timing out loading ANY page.
Have disabled Phishing
Have tweaked Windows Defender
Roll back driver for the WMP54G is greyed out

I need to run vista for my photo editing and the recognition of greater than 3.5 gig ram, will be bumping to 8 gig soon...very large image files.

before I take a hammer to this new build, can someone offer some other things I might check?

Thank you to all who have posted to this thread and for those who might have a suggestion or two for my wireless problem.

Hi all. Does rolling back the driver help if your computer already came preloaded with Vista? I have a Sony LS 25E that came with Vista Home Premium/2 G Ram in which the internet is running slower than the computer that had XP on it. Same internet connection (D Link 634 I).

If rolling back the driver is the cure - how would I go doing that?

Hello, I am having a very similar problem. I a HP laptop that runs Vista home basic. I have EarthLink as my internet provider. I have an external modem; an Zyxel p-600 series. For the longest time my connection has been running fine. I have been able to browse, download, and a watch youtube and livevideo, with little problems, but lately its been running at a snails pace, in fact I think a snail would beat it in a race. I was scared it was a virus or something but I’ve run countless Spy ware mal ware and viruses checks and nothing. Still my internet runs like dial-up. I’m looking through this thread now trying the different suggestions people have suggested for other people hoping to strike gold. Thanks, in advance. Cause if this works I’ll be very happy.

P.S Great Site by the way.

Wireless really slow on Vista
I picked up a new IBM ThinkPad T60P (Wide) running Vista Business, and I am experiencing the same problems with an extremely slow wireless connection. I get the same slow performance on the wireless network in my office as in my home.

The second I disable the wireless and plug in the cable directly to the router (ZyXeL) everything runs perfectly. I also tested connecting an Apple AirPort to the router (via cable) and connected directly to the AirPort as an access point instead of connecting to my normal wireless network, and then everything was working just fine for some reason (almost as fast as when I connect directly to the router via cable)!

The really weird thing is that I get really quick download rates on at least one website (www.dailyrush.dk) where I can download files at 1.1 MB/s (I should have 15 mbit downstream). The web pages of that website still load pretty slow though when I'm browsing. Most other websites that I have tested load insanely slowly, both when I'm just browsing the pages and when I'm downloading files. For example a 1024 x 695 pixel JPG on Flickr.com might take several minutes to load, or simply time out. The Google front page sometimes takes 15 seconds to load.

I have my old laptop parked right besides the new one, both connected to the same router on wireless, and the old laptop (IBM ThinkPad T41 running XP) performs fine - downloading anywhere from 10 to 100 times faster!

It also takes forever to connect to VPN, perhaps 15 or 20 seconds on the Vista laptop and no more than 2 seconds on the XP machine.

When I ping www.google.com in a command prompt I get some packet loss (between 25 and 100 %) but reasonable ping times averaging about 45ms which is the same as on my old laptop.

I have tried pretty much everything:

* Disabling Windows Firewall
* Disabling TCP/IP v6 and those other entries in the wireless adapter configuration that are new in Vista
* Disabling security on the router entirely
* Changing security on the router to WPA and WPA2
* Changing the channel on the router (tried several available channels)
* Switching between 802.11 a/b/g modes on the router
* Booting up in safe mode (heard that worked for someone with a similar problem)
* Updating the wireless adapter driver to the newest version
* Installing all available updates from Windows Update
* Moving my laptop really close to the router (duh)
* Uninstalling MacAfee
* Uninstalling Bullguard
* Uninstalling a bunch of pre-installed IBM stuff

I have come across several threads online where people have had the exact same problem and solved it by uninstalling the pre-installed MacAfee software. My laptop came with MacAfee too but I uninstalled it right away and installed Bullguard instead. When I noticed the connection problems I uninstalled Bullguard too, but little did it help.

I really hope that someone can help me out here ... I'm kind of running out of ideas :-( Thanks in advance.

Cheers,

Stefan

Solved!
Wee, I finally solved the problem after struggling with this thing for a bloody week!

All I had to do was change the Power Options to "Maximum Performance" both when the laptop is on battery and plugged in. That did the trick!

Cheers,

Stefan

Thanks for your post, it helped a lot and got me thinking. I went through all that, used 2 of your ideas + *. I'm using Vista Home Premium and I ended up on a new Sony VAIO.

1. Un-installed Norton Anti-Virus
2. Disabled IPv6 Protocol (Network Adapter Settings)
3. Disabled Windows Defender (Start --> Show All Programs)*

Seems like all those 3 were the bottle neck for me. Now, IE is loading the pages a lot faster and streaming videos much better as well.

Roll back your drivers!
Thanks to everyone, the rollback of the driver helped me out of the same jam as Wendy, on the same Realtek Network card. This forum is really special!

And why does this happen? Microsoft Update - these guys should really check what drivers they are offering.

I'm having the same problem that the original user does, only my driver doesn't seem to have any older versions. At least, if there are any, Intel doesn't list any on their website. I'm running Windows Vista on a Dell XPS410 and getting download speeds of about 1.56 kilobites at times. That can't be right.

Anyway, my network driver is an Intel 82566 DC Gigabit Platform LAN Connect. If you need any more information let me know, but I'm sure that this has to be the problem, as I've done just about everything else.

Once again
Hi guys

I have the same problem and i googled it and found this thread. Here's the thing - A few days ago i bought a new laptop with a RT73 usb wireless card. When i began to download the programs i needed i noticed that my internet connection was very slow. I googled it and i found some patches that would fix the problem, but no. It worked a few minutes after i rebooted, i opened utorrent and at first the download speed was 1,2 mb/s and after a few minutes it went down to 70.

I've tried to find some older drivers for my wireless lan card, but without any results. And because it's a new computer i cant roll back the drivers for the card. Can someone please help me?
