My new computer came with Windows Vista. I hate it too. I took my computer to Staples for the techs to uninstall Vista and put in Windows XP. They had the computer for 3 months...and still couldn't do it. Trained Techs...can't do it. I would never try doing the things people say on this site. I'm not that computer smart. I need help too.

It's not because you ran into incompetent technicians that all advice on this forum is provided by dumbbells. Replacing Vista by XP is the easiest thing to do. You could practically do it yourself if you find somebody to clean up your disk. It's just a bit touchier if you want XP alongside a pre-installed Vista and it's fairly easy when you know what the stumbling blocks are.

The only problem you could run into is if xp drivers for your devices are not available. I haven't heard that yet.

If you just want XP, format your disk and install XP from scratch. If you want a Vista/XP dual boot, go to message 32 in this thread.

Make sure XP drivers for your devices are available.

What a fantastic thread! Seriously, this site is one of the best on the internet.

Anyway, here's my dilemma: I just bought a Toshiba laptop with Vista installed. Having played with other friends' laptops and become horribly frustrated with the ****** Vista environment (and having many programs I want to install on the new machine but not pay a billion dollars for newer Vista-compatible versions) I want to uninstall it. I'm just afraid that because the machine came with Vista installed, the hardware won't work if I install XP again (not to mention I'm not sure I could, since I know nothing about partitioning drives and even less about laptops).

Do you have any advice?

I tried this and messed up my computer. My fault though. When installing xp it says the computer will restart to finish the installation then it starts up and says disk read error. Am i going to have to take it somewhere to get it formated?

You MUST get XP drivers for all of your hardware and there is a LOT of new hardware that there will NOT be any XP or earlier drivers.

At this point in time, I don't agree with DaveA. Most of the drivers you need are available either from laptop suppliers or from device manufacturers.

For instance, VISTA is geared towards hybrid disks and there are very few of these on the market today.

Don't forget that you are being goaded by a bunch of people who want to scare you into using Vista which buys very little for the price for most people. It's the umpteenth Microsoft snow job. At least with Windows 2000 and XP, you have stabilized systems. With these two systems you can run thousands of free or cheap softwares which replace most of Vista's so-called "new features". Furthermore, all new printers, dvd burners, etc. coming out today are compatible with those systems. They even support Windows 98! Those manufacturers aren't dumb.

I have an excellent illustration to submit to you. I am working on the implementation of a dual boot xp/Vista with a pre-installed vista on a brand new HP Pavilion dv9580ez. On HP's site, I found no driver for the following devices which are used by the notebook: Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN, Realtek RTL8168/8111 Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (for cable connection) and GeForce 8400M GS (video card).

Through Google searches I located the drivers on the respective manufacturer sites. They were all available for XP, Windows 2000 and even Windows 98 !!! I was very tempted to install Windows 2000-SP4 instead of xp because it remains the most stable and performing Windows system to date. Anyhow, don't be fooled by Cassandra's who claim you'll be having a hard time if you don't go along with Vista.

If they had been more honest with you, they would have said that they could do it, but you couldn't afford the labor they would have been forced to charge you for the research.

XP and Vista are not similar in any respect........so, you must find the drivers for XP yourself if your model did not offer XP as an option when new.

That is all there is to your dilemma, my friend. A tip from me to you though, if you would indulge me here..........Educate yourself a bit more before going any further. Invest some time in learning how your OS works and some basic hardware service procedures, i.e. partitioning, formating, repair console tool usage, ect.

It's time well spent and an education you will use for the rest of your life. Hey.....besides........you got some spare time on your hands now.......use that time you have been investing in pogo games.........hehe..........lol..

vender's are backing away from vista
IBM now offers xp for laptops again and others are following in there steps.
Toshiba has been kicking the thought of returning to xp as angry customers fwail over vistas lack of backwards compatibility and nagging disapproval screens of non windows licensed programs
there is a smell of a class action suite in the tec air against Microsoft for the force feading the crippled os as an upgrade while downgrading the computers ability's considerably
large gropings of software and hardware become handy caped as soon as vista is installed
and those that run , run slower due to the lack of resources due to the hungry os
you mite say the os has ADD because it pays attention to what it wants to and less to what you tell it to.
a game set in high priority is not the same in vista as a game set in high priority in xp.
most all gamers hate the vista os
and if linux played xp games reliably they would flock to that
so the best 3 game oses are windows 200 pro windows 98 without the servicepack2
and windows xp
i payed 2000 for a Toshiba and they force fed me vista
they wont give me xp and remove vista
the stupid thing sets in the corner in the fore like a bad step child because my stock trading platform wont run on it.
and the vista os is not compatible with most of the software that i use to conduct business that worked in xp

Just go to www.hp.com, select your pc model number and select download, support or drivers. You may also find something under www.compaq.com depending on your pc alrhough compaq was overtaken by hp.
