Cannot read content of CD, VISTA always offers to format it...
Hi there!

The CD/DVD drive appears to be working in general, however, I cannot look at the files on a CD. I have tried several CD's, burned and Original, always he same issue. When I go to My Computer and then click on the icon for the CD/DVD drive the drive starts and a pop up offers to format the cd... I have even tried to click on that but get an error that the CD is write protected (which is fine, because it is) but it won't show the data! Sometimes, when I just leave the CD in the drive for a few minutes and try again, it shows the data...

Does anybody else have this issue and a solution? Is the a way to turn off the VISTA burn feature? I am using a third party burning software anyway.

Thanks a bunch!

It's an old post but I was facing the same issue and I was able to resolve it by turning off vista's burning feature :

By Group Policy:
1. run gpedit.msc
2. go to [User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer]
3. double click [Remove CD Burning Features], choose [Enable]

By Registry:
1. run cmd.exe as administrator
2. reg add HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer /v NoCDBurning /t REG_DWORD /d 1 /f

You can use any third party free burning software like (cdburnerXp http://www.cdburnerxp.se/ ) to burn your cd/dvds.
