I believe double helix is correct about closing the auto-play but I think it is called "Computer" in vista not "My Computer"

following DoubleHelix's instructions, yet, embarrassed I cannot find "My Computer" to open. I searched but this computer does not find it (terrible search on the Gateway Vista computer). I do not know what that is, or how to find it.

Would like to try. Can you tell me how to find "My Computer" and what is that exactly.

Thanks.

THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys are just brilliant.
Ok. This worked.
I closed out of autoplay. Then I went to "Computer", then right clicked on DVD , then clicked OPEN, and there were my files....
Next, I will try to actually get them on my computer... thanks so much, really.

Right-click, copy. Navigate to destination. Right-click paste.

Well I was able to open up the CD thru Computer and right clicking,

I had a hard time copying by right clicking to copy, etc.

But was able to DRAG 2 of the big file folders on my desktop.

I had 3 giant file folders full of files (4,000 files) -
I am able to Drag 2 of the giant file folders on the desktop (hurray!!)

I am UnAble to Drag the third one, it puts my computer in an endless loop of "explorer not responding" with that round thing spinning forever, I pull the battery to restart it again and again this happens.

So, I can get most of my files. Perhaps I'll try to get another CD burnt on somebodys else computer, and then put it in and try it that way.

Thanks for your help. I appreciate it alot.

How to turn off Autoplay, can't open XP CD on vista.
Hi guys!
I have read all the posts about problems with opening a CD created on XP on my Vista laptop. I went to settings and turned off the 'autoplay' then restarted the computor. Then, went to 'computor' and tried again to 'right click' and open. I am getting a blank. It keeps saying 'insert a disc into drive E' then the disk drive opens. The disk is in correctly, facing down. Are you able to help? or should I simply save all my info on a flash drive and resave on DVD on my vista laptop? I'm going crazy with this. Thanks for your help

Dear Kumachan,
I am not a techguy. Just a user like you has had this happen on my old computer.
In my case (a common problem, I found out), It was the program I used to make the cd's.
Roxio's Easy CD or any other incarnation of, has a drag and drop app in their Software called "Direct CD" and it does not play well w/ others! I usually puts a file on the cd that is suppose to help other programs/ burners read it but often it don't work.
The only way I solved it was to install one of their programs on my computer (xp at the time). Unfortunately, it screwed up my computer royally! It actually threw out my CD drives and I had to go through a long drawn out solution to fix it. I haven't even tried my Roxio 7 on my new Vista PC. I have to do it though if I want to use my many files on MANY CD's. I am going to go to their site and look for any software updates for Vista before I do. Even then, I will cross my fingers.
Even if you didn't use one of their products, IF you used any prog that uses a drag and drop feature you need to check for updates for the prog, DL them, install your original burning prog, install the UD and hopefully this will fix the problem. Apparently, the drag and drop apps use a different form of writing. I think they write in packets?
Also, if you still have the old pc. You could copy the desired files to a Sharing folder, network your computers, set up file sharing, and access your files.
Let me know how everything go's?
take care,
star****

same problem
I have the same problem and Microsoft refers to this problem here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/933486/en-us but they supply no solution. I am not able to see an data on cd's that I backed up on my xp computer on Vista. I tried the steps you had earlier in this posting but it did not work for me. I do see the name of the cd but there are no files there. I also tried opening in other program like Nero and MagicISO but no luck.

Here's the fix
I had the exact same problem as the OP and have been fighting it for a month. I finally fixed it yesterday.

Go to Control Panel/Programs and Features. On the left, select "Turn Windows features on or off". Put a check beside "Removable Storage Management".

Everything has worked fine for me since I did that. Good luck.

Same problem. none of these solutions mentioned worked. I haven't gotten updates yet, this is a new install, and I'm hoping that this is solved after it updates. One drive shows no files in a certain folder; another older drive, i get a message that windows cannot read that folder. Both see executable program files outside that folder. This only happens on Vista. XP and 2000 have no trouble with it.
