Well if other USB devices are working in these ports -- it just may be that you have a defective printer.

Can you test it in another computer to see if it is detected? You probably don't have to install any drivers just to see if Windows sees it.

If it is not detected in another computer I would certainly think they would replace or repair it under warranty.

I don't understand whay you told me here:

The drivers will not dowload for me to print anything though. when i try tio install it still does not regognize my usb cords and both are new fresh out of the box it was working for four months and i dowloaded it with an xp installation disk.
If you have not installed the Vista version drivers -- uninstall what you have, reboot and do so.

On both my XP system to which it is physically installed and my Vista system to which it is networked -- the port is described as "virtual printer port for USB"

Any chance you can physically connect this printer by USB to another computer and see if it is detected?

I don't know how you add it manually. It should be there automatically.

Run services.msc and veify that both Plug and Play and Spooler services are present, started and set to 'automatic' startup. Double click the service if it is necessary to make a configuration change. Reboot if you make any changes.

>> Try selecting the DOT4_001 port and see what happens.

The problem is this printer is not even being detected as a USB device from what I can tell. That's why you need to confirm that it is not a hardware problem with the printer itself.

When you look in the Device Manager under USB devices -- there is nothing printer related there at all?

Unfortunately I can't make a direct comparison since I haven't actually installed this printer on Vista just networked it. I don't know whether you should see the same printer entries in Vista that I see in XP.

Are you getting any kind of error message?

There may be a "hotfix" available that could help:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/937187

Check the c:\windows\INF directory (this is a hidden directory) for the file infcache.1

If it is there try renaming it infcache.1.bak , reboot and try the install again.

If it is not there you need the hotfix above.

See this link -- you have to edit the Security permissions to rename it:
