Question windows vista will not upload drivers for printer
My printer was working when i got it. now it doesnt.when i try to reinstall my photosmart c4180 printer it says internal error 2738 fatal error.Hp support could not help me the printing shop nor the computer shop did anything for me. the drivers cannot be installed from hp.com or the disk. The vista intallation disk was sent to me monday and it has the same results as the website. what is missing from my computer that the drivers wont install? im confused and i run a small business and need my printers. I had adware on my computer but no longer have it would that have killed my drivers permantly? Please help me

If you have UAC disabled -- try enabling it at least temporarily, reboot and try the install again.

Also make sure all 3rd party antivirus and firewall applications are disabled or anything that may block the execution of scripts.

And try this: Start > run: cmd and at the prompt enter:

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

You should get a response that the dllregisterserver in vbscript.dll succeeded

UAC stands for User Access Control. If you don't know what it is you probably haven't disabled it -- but it's that annoying message you receive that requires you to confirm any action that Windows deems potentially harmful if not authorized properly.

If you disconnect it, reboot, and then reconnect it -- is it detected by the usual USB connection or disconenction response?

Does it not show up in the Control Panel > Printers folder after that?

Did the install place icons on your desktop and system tray?

What is the error? Does the printer show up in the Control Panel Printer folder? Is the HP driver and utilities installation present in Add/Remove programs?

Run eventvwr.msc and look at the event logs for System and Application.

See what printing related errors are listed there. You can double click them to read the description and there is a copy tab to copy the description to the clipboard for pasting.

I don't understand this:

.

If the HP install routine completed successfully it should have automatically placed more than one icon on the desktop and an icon that allows access to configuration settings in the tray.

Just go to Start > run: or Winkey+r and enter: eventvwr.msc

Look at the system and applications logs or look at the recent critical errors.

When you actually get the error there should be a description or a code associated with the error. Let me know what that is.

There doesn't need to be anything in the "location" box. However select the Ports tab. If this is a USB printer you should see something like what I have here (see attachment).

This is installed on XP but is also networked to Vista

Don't worry about "bothering" me -- threads may go on for dozens of posts before there is a resolution or at least a real understanding of a problem

>> Well if you have the printer connected through a USB cable to a USB port on the computer and there is no USB port option in that HP properties configuration -- clearly something is wrong with the connection not being detected.

Do other USB devices work on this computer? Can you try a different port?

Are you sure the cable is securely inserted in both the printer and the computer's USB port? Do you have a different cable you can try?

Is the USB cable connected directly to the port or through a hub multiplier of some kind?

>> Did this Pavillion come with Vista or is it an older model on which you have installed Vista?

>> If you open the Device Manager (run: devmgmt.msc) and look at the key for "Universal Serial Bus controllers" do you see any "marks" or error indications there?

Do you have a device that says "Enhanced Host Controller"?

yes
ive tried all the ports none of them work ive tried two cables one was brand new. it is connected straight to the port on the computer. the pavillion came with vista home premium. it says all ports are working properly. I have two root hubs, one standard pci to usb host controller, one standard openhcd usb host controller.
