AV chat --sluggish keyboard

i am an acer laptop that came with vista home premium. One of the things i enjoy is an AV chat room. When I go into that chat room with this laptop, the keyboard becomes horribly sluggish, almost inoperable.

I have 1.5 gig of memory. I have the latest update of java.
any other ideas?

There is another program i love to use, but it simply is not vista ready and won't be till late fall (so says the software manufacturer) so maybe i should just go to XP, but that is a can of worms i don't want to try unless i have to.

Smart Music is the second program. I have discussed it with the manufacturer's tech folks and they swear it is not going to be vista ready until the fall
