I've split you off the other post, its always best to start a new thread.

What is the exact problem you are having, and when did it start?

I have Windows Vista Ultimate and I went into C: Drive properties and Checked "Compress disk drive to save space" (this was a bad idea) and it compresses the boot files for windows... I have vista ultimate but only have the cd for home basic (long story)

Looking over the web it seems you should try the following:

Boot the Vista DVD to get to a command line, then execute the following commands:

expand bootmgr temp
attrib bootmgr -s -r -h
del bootmgr
ren temp bootmgr
attrib bootmgr -a +s +r +h

And then reboot.

I just tried that and after every command line it responds with things like "bootmgr is not found" and i did not delete it or anything.

Those commands should be getting the file off the Vista CD. When you did those commands what results did you get after each one?

Here the errors are, word for word:

Can't open input file: bootmgr.
File not found - bootmgr
Could Not Find X:\Sources\bootmgr
The system cannot find the file specified.
File not found - bootmgr.

I tried system restore and all of the other repair options and none of them work. Would the Home Basic Vista cd have the same materials to use with Ultimate to use the commands? Does it have to be the Ultimate CD to get the file off of it?

I think any Vista disc should be fine, as this is the same for all of them. By the way why don't you have a Ultimate disc?

There's more suggestions mentioned here, you may wish to try them: http://winvistaforums.com/windows-vi...ompressed.html

compressed bootmgr/ntldr/grldr
Hi majinalchemy,

you need to first of all navigate to "c:". when you log in via the recovery console in a DOS screen, it defaults to "c:\windows". The bootmgr or ntldr or grldr (whichever is applicable to you) is not in this directory. you need to go 1 directory up. There you'll find the files you need. to get there try: "cd .." this should take you up, and then you can try the commands Triple6 gave you. cheers.

Exclamation How to boot Vista with No Vista DVD/CD
I am having the same error msg. after two programs running together did not work as they should.
"Bootmgr is missing.
Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart."
The loop repeats indefinitely infinitely.

After thorough Web research it seems:

1. You need Windows PE 2.0 to get booting.
2. In order to do that, you'll need to d/l Windows AIK (992 MB).
3. According to MS, Windows PE will boot up a system, run a lot of Vista programs, and run a few utilities that came with PE.
4. Diskpart.exe is the utility you want to use in PE according to someone on TechNet.
5. Also needed, is a .IMG converter to process the 992 MB file.

I hope to get the Vista DVD/CD in 3 days but until then I will do the prev. steps once my d/l finishes it prob. 3 hrs.
This experience is a little frightening.
