You have a couple of possible malware issues in the scanlog. These would not be removed by a reinstall unless it was a clean, destructive install, which removed ALL past data.

C:\Windows\system32\conime.exe

C:\Windows\System32\dfrgui.exe

Are you personally familiar with either of them? Neither shows a startup location.

Were they present in the startup list when you tested in Safe Mode? Typically issues that persist in Safe Mode would be hardware related -- but in this case, perhaps not.

If this system is connected to a LAN I would disconnect all OTHER computers from the router and just connect this directly for a test.

If you didn't install these and don't know how to remove them I will ask a Security expert to look into this thread for you.

In the mean time try using the Windows Task Manager to terminate those processes and see if connectivity improves and if they at least stay terminated during the current session.

Post back with further information.

The dfrgui.exe file is likely the defrag utilitiy in Vista and conime may or may not be legit. Please locate the conime.exe file and right click on it and select properties. Does it have a version tab saying it belongs to Microsoft? What is the size of the file and the date created?

Download AVG Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop. Note for AVG Free anti-virus users only: this is not the same program that you already have, this is an anti-spyware program.

When the trial period expires it becomes feature-limited freeware but is still worth keeping as a good on-demand scanner.

  1. Once you have downloaded AVG Anti-Spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double click it to launch the set up program.
  2. Once the setup is complete you will need run AVG Anti-Spyware and update the definition files.
  3. On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the "Start Update" button. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
  4. Once the update has completed, select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
  5. Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".
  6. Under "Reports"
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found"
Close AVG Anti-Spyware. Do Not run a scan just yet, we will run it in safe mode.

This new version of AVG-AS has a glitch that doesn't allow it to run in safe mode so I'm attaching an AVGASPatch.zip file. Save it to your desktop. Unzip it and double click the AVGASPatch.reg file and allow it to enter into the registry. This is a patch that will permit the program to run in safe mode.

Reboot your computer into Safe Mode. You can do this by restarting your computer and continually tapping the F8 key until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode then hit enter.

IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while AVG Anti-Spyware is scanning as it may interfere with the scanning process:
  1. Launch AVG Anti-Spyware by double clicking the icon on your desktop.
  2. Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".
  3. AVG will now begin the scanning process. Please be patient as this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete, do the following:
  4. If you have any infections you will be prompted. Then select "Apply all actions."
  5. Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
  6. Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left-hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file. This is important).
  7. Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode.

They are evidently both Microsoft files -- my error for googling them instead of just looking for them on my own Vista. You must have been running a defrag at the time of the scanlog.

Unless Cookiegal can find something hidden I suspect this really is a hardware issue.

But just one more question -- with the system at idle -- do you see "constant" activity in the modem icon in the system tray?

yes i did a defrag a few days ago. Why the date? computer is not even 2 months old.

cookiegal told me to download avg spyware which did. I have Webroot spysweeper already on the computer. Would it conflict? I ended up getting a message from avg spyware saying they found something and aked if me I wanted to clean it, which I did and said I would need a restart, which i did.

Now I have no mouse use!! I can't operate the computer without a mouse!

I have shifted my internet to an old laptop
Help!

Sorry I forgot to attach the patch but I think it may no longer be needed. Can you try running the scan in safe mode and let me know please?

Go to Control Panel - Add/Remove programs and remove these, if there:

FunWebProducts
MyWebSearch
iWin Games

Rescan with HijackThis, close all browser windows except HijackThis, put a check mark beside these entries and click fix checked.

O2 - BHO: IEHlprObj Class - {8CA5ED52-F3FB-4414-A105-2E3491156990} - C:\PROGRA~1\IWINGA~1\IWINGA~1.DLL

Locate and delete this folder:

C:\Program Files\iWin Games

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log please.

Is it a USB mouse? Try unplugging it and plugging it back in and then rebooting. Vista should recognize it.

The date on the file means the date it was created or modified, but not necessarily on your computer.

There shouldn't be a conflict with SpySweeper and AVG-AS but you shouldn't run both real-time protection at the same time. AVG-AS realtime expires after the trial period.
