i never downloaded the update. It just looked a little suspect when i did a search on the internet. Should I just do a clean install?
My son said he noticed that AVG antivirus spotted a virus around the time it started to slow down, but wouldn't it just get rid of the virus?
Also if its still somewhere if i get a clean install done would it still affect my computer?

I'd try installing any available update for the hardware on the system.

Keep in mind that if you really do a clean install -- you're going to have to reinstall the chipset drivers from that CD anyway or probably better -- go to the ASUS site and get the latest Vista drivers for it. If you've never done that -- that could be the solution to your problem.

I take it this motherboard did not originally come with Vista, but this is a retail CD you bought for the purpose?

http://www.ewido.net/en/onlinescan/
http://www.kaspersky.com/virusscanner
http://www.nanoscan.com/
download...
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
then do a scan and save log...
enter the log here...
http://www.hijackthis.de/

Delete whatever it tells you to delete, if there is anything to delete...

With those, you don't need to download software....they're the most certified, and they're free online scanners...avast and AVG anti-virus suck at detection....they got one of the lowest on *av-comparitives google it*.....

go to the google pack...
http://pack.google.com/intl/en/pack_...=google%20pack
Check the free norton scanner....you can use that from now on for viruses, way better, and free, without all the flashyness of everything...

As for spyware, the ewido AVG online scanner will do, it can remove any of the spyware it catches, if not, you can download the program, and it will have a better chance of removing what it couldn't in the online scanner...

Now that that's out of the way

http://www.download.com/3000-2096_4-10656403.html

download that, uninstall anything you don't need, go to start up programs tab in there, right click and delete all unessary ones, go to junk file scanner, scan everything, then click delete all, it'll only delete empty folders and files not needed or temporary ones...

go to disk cleanup, by right clicking one of the hard drives in computer...then do it for all accounts, uac prompt, it'll load up everything, then delete everything...

http://www.filehippo.com/download/98...2ae2/download/

Downlaod that...then uncheck 'windows files more than 48 hours to find* in options...then..chekc everything in the clearing thing in both tabs, then click run anylzer it'll tell u how much space is being used and what theyre gonna clean, they even have a registry scanner, use that...

http://www.eusing.com/free_registry_...ry_cleaner.htm

download that, and use that....

if you really want this registry stuff good, I'd suggest a registry mechanic purchase, I've give you my code, but that would be illegal *I think*

wow, I'll come back later, I really don't feel like saying the rest right now...

I think I'll just bring it into a computer shop and see what they can do. Rog I don't know if the cd came with vista or not, I just bought the whole system complete. Its all legit stuff.
Anyway thanks for all the help everyone and when I get it repaired I'll let you all know what was wrong, in this topic.
I talked to one guy at the computer shop and he said if I got a virus or spyware and it got deleted, it might have attached it to a file and would still be there doing something to slow it down even after I had a clean install.
The computer was supposed to come with Norton but the guy didn't know how to install on Vista so he said to download AVG Free til he figured out how to put Norton on.

The last computer I bought with Xp, from him, I'd had no problems so I thought he was very honest. I think he is in over his head on Vista or just learning!

Actually I would recommend you stay away from Symantec and stick with AVG unless you need heavy duty protection. I use AVG on all my systems -- but I never really need much protection.

The Symantec install that came with my Vista computer doubled the bootup time -- uninstalling it was a big relief.

I agree to go with AVG anti-virus over Norton.

Good luck.

Well I finally got my computer fixed! Brought it to a different computer store and He reinstalled Vista again. He told me it should fly cause he had it on the internet and he said it was fast! Brought it home and it was slower than before! Arg!!!!
Phoned him and told him he said no way! I asked him, "could it be the jack for the internet on the back of the computer"? He said, No! So when I brought it in I asked one of his repair guys and he said thats possible. Put in the new card and wham, fast as anything!
I even asked about the jack to the guy where I bought the computer from and he also told me no possible way could that be a problem. Nice guy he is because he wouldn't return my calls or wouldn't answer the phone (must have had call display)!
So I just wanted to tell you and I appreciate all your help.
