slow ..... so slow internet
just recently purchased a computer with vista. Worked great for about 2 weeks then slowly the internet started to get slower and slower. Took it back to where bought it and he deleted everything and reloaded it. Still slow!
Took it to a different computer shop and they cleaned the registry. Worked great forabout a day. Kept getting slower and slower. Ran a test it said 28.8 modem speed. I'm on cable. hmmm
Cable checked out fine, antivirus, nothing! Spy Sweeper no problems! Windows Defender no problems.
Disabled firewall and antivirus and still slow!
Great computer for Solitaire!!!!

Try looking at the network card.. If it is a Realtek one, see if the driver has updated recently, if it has, roll back the driver. Had the same problem and that was the cause.
Hope this helps.

Test to see if it is browser related by installing something other than IE.

If you have the "phishing" filter enabled in IE -- try disabling that.

Also test IE in "no add-ons" mode. This option is in the All Programs > accessories > system tools folder.

For internet speed testing I like to use:

Right click on my computer, and go to Manage, then go to Device Manager, and then click on Network adapters. And that will tell you what sort of Network card you have. Do you connect through usb or ethernet?

Do your issues persist while on another browser-- Mozilla or Opera based?

my network card is Attansic L1 Gigabit Ethernet. drivers were not updated recently so I can't roll back. Someone brought over their laptop and hooked it up to my connection and it flew!
Meanwhile it still plays solitaire really good!

Post a HijackThis scanlog and let's see what you have running:

Download and install HijackThis using the "self extractor". Run it and select "do a system scan and save the log file". Then copy/paste the contents of the log to a reply

http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/hijackthis_sfx.exe

Also you might want to test the system by booting to Safe Mode with Networking support. Internet speed there should be "normal" for whatever normal should be.

If it is fast in Safe Mode with Networking -- you might want to try doing some "clean boot" troubleshooting:

Run msconfig and select the "Services" tab. Check "Hide Microsoft Services" and then disable the rest. Also uncheck "load startup group" on the general page.

See this link for detailed information:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135

Now restart and test the issue at hand

If no problems, run msconfig and recheck half the disabled items on the Services tab. Test again. If the problem recurs, UNcheck half the items you just checked to narrow down the culprit.

If the problem didn't occur, check the other half, so all the Services are enabled -- proceed to do this on the startup tab as well.

Get the idea? You want to isolate the problem to a specific startup if possible.

Note: if you already have items unchecked under msconfig > startups and are in “selective” startup mode – you should note what these are before beginning. They will need to be de-selected again.

It still maybe the network card, try installing an older driver for your network card. The person that helped me out with my internet problem didn't roll back his driver, he installed an older driver, and it fixed his problem. I have xp and vista installed on my computer, and the internet worked fine when I switched to xp, so I knew that it was a Vista problem, and it was the driver for the network card. We explored every avenue in trying to fix my problem, and it was only when I got the reply about installing the older driver for the network card. My network card had recently installed an updated driver, and it worked fine for a week, and then stopped working to less than dial-up speed. Because yours is a new computer just try installing an older driver than the one that is installed for your network card.
