Exclamation Odd IE7 behavior
I'm brand new to the forum and looking for help...

Within the past month I bought a new HP dv9000 laptop with Vista Home Premium pre-installed. After playing with the bundled accessories and investigating the new O/S features I installed my favorite software. Somewhere along the line some of the multimedia features got clobbered. The first clue was that MPEG files would not play in the Media Player or Media Center. I somehow managed to get that resolved only to find that the "QuickPlay" did not work (HD-DVD player). While trying to download and reinstall software for that, I discover that Internet Explorer is behaving oddly.

Even on run-of-the-mill web pages, some/many graphics dont appear at all, or are represented by the all-to-familiar square and red 'X' icon. Right clicking the "red x" and looking at the properties tells me it is sometimes a GIF image, somtimes a PNG image. I'm guessing that the image is supposed to be part of a web page control of some sort, because many menus across the tops of pages have the "red x" icons or just text, but don't do anything when clicked.

More concerning is that buttons don't appear when they should. For example, trying to download Java 6 and or Flash player, the download web pages have some of the "red x" icons and such, but no buttons to perform the actual downloads. Its like Internet Explorer has lost its ability to display and/or run controls or something.

Worst is that when going to MapQuest.com, a page is rendered properly EXCEPT THERE IS NO MAP. If I get driving directions from/to anywhere, the entire web page looks correct with all the logos, directions and little icons, but no map is shown.

Is this a Direct-X issue? An Active-X issue? I've researched the HP site, the Microsoft site and many, many Google links, but haven't been able to figure this one out and fix it. Can anyone help me please?

You could try reinstalling IE7 but that is a bit difficult in Vista as it is an integral part of the operating system.

Here is a post from a guy in this forum who had some ideas how to do it.

You could always try reinstalling Vista again - just slip in the CD and ler 'er rip!

Can't hurt anything.

Also have you tried a System restore to a date before you started "playing around"?

IE7 odd behaviour take 2
hi,
thank goodness i came across this forum... i too have been experiencing odd behaviour from IE7 i have only had vista since august last year and so am still trying to get to grips with the changes and thought the problem was with a piece of software i had downloaded or the ISP. 3 weeks ago i noticed i wasnt able to view certain images on 3-6 websites again no common factor as i could view certain gif images on other websites but on these few.

Unfortunately im at my teather here. I have completed a destructive restore on my pc after trying endless amounts of installing updates, changing this or that setting on both pc and internet provider. Endless phone calls to get assistance or to see if anything to see if there is technical problems along the line to be told there wasnt. Before i came across this forum i was thinking that my pc had had it even though only having it for less than a yr but now i find that its an IE problem..i have also tried firefox but i get the same problem so it looks like until microsoft have sorted this problem we're stuck with it..could any one tell me if they have tried firefox and it has worked for them??

indeed you would have thought that microsoft would have devloped a repair to something that has been built into their system that you have no way of removing or repairing.

I do NOT think this is a Vista issue, as there are very few reports of this. It sounds more like a third party security issue more than any thing.

What AV, spy and firewall programs are you running?

Prior to it happening i was just using the firewall and malware and spy ware built into vista. Also what ever antivirus it is using. Having realised that there wasnt an antivirus as such i got AVG but there is no viruses on my pc. I did check that nothing was being blocked through the firewall as even resorted to turning the firewall off to check.
