I can capture the image with ALT-PRTSc, I just can't figure out how to post it?
Sorry, Vista has me pulling my hair out, can't figure out the simpliest of actions.

Truely discouraged,

If you had gotten one of those utilities...

When you say captured-- do you mean you saved it to file or it's sitting in your clipboard? If the latter, open up paint or whatever graphics program, paste, save it with name & location you can remember-- try to save it with .gif extension.... then press clip next to smilie here... the rest is self-explanatory as you get prompted while doing it...

There wasn't a trial version of Office on the machine, was there?

A handful of things come to mind:

1. Vista handles discs a bit different than xp...however, you already have been able to run other discs on Vista... and you've verified that disc works on xp NOW....

2. The sheer size of Office may be exacerbating some already present issue-- there may be a problem with ram or a cdrom / hard drive cache / buffer / write behind / dma setting. So:

ram test............or at least remove each of your two ram sticks once..... + in device manager/disk drives/your drive model/properties/policies-- there are a bunch of settings re: optimize for performance/enable write (behind) caching/enable advanced performance, etc. the first one at least you should be able to turn on, the others may not be user adjustable, depending on model. In ide-ata-atapi controllers/ you may have some devices...channel 0... toggle pio to highest number dma setting that will take. If you update your ViiV or Intel App Accelerator(AMD has equivalent software), it also enhances some dma & other functions... via drivers, bios, etc.....anything else applicable to you.

Slow down your dvd player speed if you can.....

It may also help to burn disc to hard drive, then run setup(I would for OTHER reasons too: disc may get damaged, + sometimes you need original disc to install a major update(although i heard they did away with this on 2007)--Isobuster would be ideal for that.

If you have had issues copying large files, TeraCopy may help: http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.asp or... it may worsen an already-present problem...

3. Some Office(or even other program) partial install and/or incomplete, looping install procedure that clashes with later install attempts.

I would ensure all cache/temp folders, indexing, prefetch, hibernate, + pagefiles are cleared-- re Cache & TEMP: one each in root drive(s), windows root, & in various Users/yourusername/app data/program data/search/microsoft folders.... hibernate/pagefile-- one each in root drive(s) & maybe in windows root.

And with some Reg / Uninstall Cleaner like this one: http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/index.html#jv16 Remove any instances of Office or its individual components(it has a Registry Tool module that you can run and scroll through).

In Control Panel/Autoplay/toggle it off.... & try again to run installer as ADMIN....+ try each of the other ones-- there should be a setup.msi, other type of .msi, install.exe, setup.exe, maybe even one w/ an .inf extension.

4. Some security app: innoculator/spy/av/firewall/etc. blocking something...even some Advanced or Security tabs IE setting......

5. A couple of Office 2007 components have had unresolved issues installing on Vista-- try if possible, installing individiual modules first.....

6.Try MS tech support-- demand they help you... at least ship you a replacement cd(& TRY BORROWING ONE FROM A COLLEAGUE).... or even provide you some download link if possible.
BTW don't be too terrified of last option-- http://www.orbitdownloader.com/ is extremely efficient because of its underlying tech(P2P)-- no matter how fast your broadband service, it will allow you to multiply efficiency in an order of several times.... let it run overnight.

PS your Office version has been reported to work seamlessly on Vista.

Can you past a screenshot of the error message, if you can't remember it exactly?
Color me stupid, but I cannot figure out how to use this ISObuster ???
I got it to load using WinRAR. Archived the DVD files to HD and then installed from HD. Works fine now, somethng wrong n the way MS made the DVD.

I would reccommend WinRAR.
