Vista beeps, tones, and dings constantly, not sure why
This just started happening recently.

When I start Vista, it beeps and dings, it seems as every process is started. So if I have like 10 taskbar programs running, I'll get over 10 beeps and/or dings as each loads. Everytime I open a new window like a browser, new program, etc. I get a "notify" tone- like you hear in IE when there's a notify at the top of the page to install an ActiveX control. Everytime I open a folder, like in explorer, I get an alert "ding". Sometimes, while the computer is sitting idle, it will just beep or ding on it's own every few minutes. It's very odd and highly annoying. Many times when I select things, like in a list or dropdown, it dings.

I did get a virus warning, about the time this started but Windows OneCare said it removed it. When I run a virus scan it finds an IeFrame Exploit and a worm but it says quaranteen failed. When I investigate that message online, I'm told that it's usually because the virus is in like an email attachment and it couldn't be removed but that it is being blocked by OneCare.

Someone please help!!!
Thanks!

Have you tried going into sound (Right click on the desktop). Select the Sound tab and scroll down to "Device connect" and select "None"" (First on the list)

Actually I found the problem. Uhaligani, after looking in the sounds menu, I noticed that some of the speaker icons next to the sound name were colored yellow. I also noticed that the sound sceme said Windows Default (modified). I haven't changed any of those settings so a mystery as to how they got changed. After loading the Windows Default sound scheme, no more beeps and dings.

Are you sure the problem is completely solved?
Hi: I had the same problem 3 months ago and found the same solution that you have found. However the problem keep returning ever so often. I'm uncertain if it's a virus, bug, or a program that I run that cause this. I'm leaning towards the later and next toward a bug but I haven't ruled out the possibility of a virus. My next stop is the Windows website to file a complaint or at the very least seek help on their forums.

Cheers,
Rasheed
