I think the "failed to find" description here may be a clue that it is looking for updates for a version of Vista no longer supported or included in their search list -- hence no updates found:

I agree, RR.

I will call Microsoft, after which I will post an update.

Thanks for your help.

Sincerely,

I called Microsoft & spoke with a front line tech & his supervisor. Both told me that the version of Vista that I had installed is a trial version.

I called Microsoft pre-sales to learn about upgrading Vista Business to Vista Ultimate. The sales rep said he thought that Microsoft had given each Vista Launch party attendee a fully operable version of Vista Ultimate.

I had received, at a Microsoft sponsored Vista launch party, Jan 2007, instructions as to how to a fully working, non trial version of Vista Ultimate 32 bit. Instructions were given, at the launch, to use a special Product Key, given to attendees. No mention was made that the result would be anything other than a full, real Windows Vista OS. Now, I have read the fine print on the back of the disk jacket. It states: "This copy of Windows Vista is a pre-release version intended to be used as a preview of Windows Vista software. .. . ."

The saga continues, but I suspect that I will have to purchase an update disk or upgrade key.

At Microsoft's forums, at least 2 users have started threads within the past week, describing the situation that I have described in this thread.

Well, that's interesting. There is a distinction here to note though between the Product Key and the build version -- evidently they didn't quite appreciate this themselves if they led you to believe that build version would have the same support cycle as any other.

On the Vista installs that we get through the MVP program -- they give us ONE disk or download good for multiple licenses and versions. What gets installed in terms of the version (from Basic to Ultimate) is determined by the Product Key we choose to use.

In your case the Product Key is as permanent as any other and is not a "trial version" -- but the build itself was. Somebody screwed up.

RR:
I agree with your analysis.

I have a copy of XP Pro with upgrade disk to Vista Business. For a mere $139, I can purchase an upgrade to Vista Ultimate, using the "AnyTime Upgrade" feature of Vista.

I would like to keep this thread open for about a week. The sales rep I mentioned, above, in #18, said he would contact the Microsoft Tech Support escalation team, on my behalf.

Sincerely,
RF123

I haven't heard from Microsoft, so I suspect that I am out of luck.

Solved.

Solution: buy commercial [ retail or OEM ] Vista.

Not so fast
I ran the launch day preview but I paid and upgraded/unlocked to the full Ultimate edition months ago. Guess what? I get this error to. When I called support they said only way around the issue was a reload. Not upgrade. A reload. Doesn't matter that I paid for the full version, aaparently unlocking a better version of launch day release doesn't "un-launch day it". $300 out the window. Well until I go back to the store and verbally beat the customer service person down to refunding my Vista purchase. Then I'm going out and buying an Apple or loading Linux and will just run an XP in VMware for corporate access. Jerks.
