Solved: Vista Updates 8024D00A
Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit, installed Feb 2007
NON-RC installation disk.
At that time, I had turned off Windows updates automatic feature.
New system
Workgroup, NOT Domain

I tried to manually obtain updates, but received error code 8024D00A

Windows Help suggested that I might have IE set to use a proxy server. I verified that the computer is not set to use a proxy server.

I also tried as "Administrator". Same error message.

I tried using "Windows Update" as well as manually going to www.microsoft.com/updates [ which instructed me to use the "Windows Update" utility.

I am using Vista's firewall.

I hope you can help me.

Sincerely,
RF123

My internet connection is established on this, the problem, computer.

I had a similar issue where an update wouldn't install. I finally removed all the files in \WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads, and finally got the update to run. If you do this, I suggest saving them somewhere and also having a backup of your Windows partition.

Thanks.
No joy.
Reboot; no joy.
Removed contents of Windows\SoftwareDistribution\SelfUpdates ; reboot, no joy.

Turned off UAC; reboot; no joy.

By non -RC version, I meant that it is a real version of Vista. I think I could use the term "commercial", but because I didn't buy it [ it was given to me by Microsoft when I attended the Vista launch party, ~ 18 Jan 2007 ] I chose to not use the term commercial.

I ran Vista's Mem Diag, no problems detected.

No luck after disabling the Java & Active X controls in IE.

When I go to www.microsoft.com/updates, then click on Windows updates, upper right, IE instructs me to use Windows Updates from the start menu.

In Safe Mode with networking, Windows Updates won't run; it is a service.

With the system config's diag mode, Windows Update won't run.

When I try to start "windows update" service in services.msc, "Configuration Manager". The machine selected for remote communications is not available at this time."

I have verified that the date & time are correct.

Any idea what this is? > O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [WindowsWelcrefix:

I'm also curious about the "garbage" at the end of the scanlog -- while this has nothing to do with Windows I presume -- I see nothing at all in Scanlogs run on my Vista system using the same version of HijackThis.

As this is Vista Ultimate -- it has a "complete backup" option. Has that ever been used and did Windows update ever work properly on this system?

I really suspect this is a problem with the release build of this version if it never worked.

Can you post the contents of the "windowsupdate.log" that shows the failure?

I'm wondering if you're eligible for phone support from MS -- it won't hurt to give them a ring at 1-800-Microsoft.

They may be able to tell you whether that version is supported -- I can't really tell from googling the version number -- though it appears consistent with a "free" version that seems to have been given out.

I will call them, unless I can find a solution by searching the internet.

vista "windows could not search for new updates"

My previous search string had included 8024D00A

According to Vista's System Information, I have build 5840. HJT reports a version # which must be different from the build #.

According to this thread, I am not the only person with this problem.

Time for me to call Microsoft.
