Can't open e-mail .DOC attachment
When I try to open a .doc attachment on an incoming e-mail on Vista it asks if I want to open it. When I click yes the following message comes up

"This flle does not have a program asssociated with it. For performing this action create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel"

I can't find the "Set Associations" folder in the Control Panel.

Please help

Tks and rgds

Hmmm. seems like .DOC if for Microsoft office Word.

So you need either MS word or Open Offfice.

In Vista, Control Panel - Default Programs - Set Associations

The .doc should be set to open with Microsoft Word, but unless you have Word (part of Office) installed then thats not an oprion. As above confirm that you do have Word installed. It's not part of Windows.

Tks Kiwiguy,
Don't have Office installed (it is my wife's computer and she doesn't need Office). I have dowloaded Open Office and that solved the problem.
Tks for the reply and rgds

DOC files
I have lots of files I created using Windows 98 that are DOC files that I can't view in Vista as I don't need Office 2007. Would Open Office solve my problem? Is it reliable? Are there any potential problems?
With Windows 98 I had Office 2000. Can I install this Office 2000 along with Vista and would that solve the problem?
Or is there some other solution?

Open Office:
It's reliable
It's free
No problems
It will open the .doc files
No other solution would be required. OpenOffice is a winner in such cases.

Office 2000 *should* install OK, but there may be some minor issues with Vista, mainly with Outlook.

But it depends on your version of Office 2000. If it was OEM (supplied with the PC rather than purchased after) then it may not install. Activation was introduced in some countries beginning with Office 2000, which could track the install history. But as we don't know the version or country of purchase, it's unknown as to any possible problems in that area.

Thanks. Open Office seems to work fine-what a relief. I may try installing Office 2000 also.

Open Office
Disaster. I send people documents I created in OpenOffice and they can't open them. If I send them to myself no problem. Does everyone have to download Open Office?

Don't sweat it. Panic is normal when messing with something new. I haven't spent much time with OpenOffice, but I would think you might have to save the files as Microsoft files (compatibility) in order to share them with others.

I hope you get it working. If you get stuck again, let us know. We've been there.

Hi,

I am also facing the problem of opening .doc files from Windows Mail.

I have already installed MS office and able to open the .doc mail attachment by saving it to desktop or some other location.

But from Windows Mail attachment if I double click I am not able to open these files, I receive ""This flle does not have a program asssociated with it. For performing this action create an association in the Set Associations Control Panel". I cross checked the associations also.

Kindly let me know what could be the problem and solution.

Regards

Kris
