It isn't really a Dell problem, it seems to be a Vista problem. I have Comcast internet with a Linksys router for the notebooks. Our Gateway notebook (Vista) and our Toshiba notebook (Vista) are having wireless connection issues. My Dell Inspiron notebook (Windows XP) has no problems making a wireless connection.

I have now tried connecting unsecure and SSID on/off and on WEP and they both work great!

But i can not get it working on WPA 2 (tkip or aes)I have totally given up and got a cheap USB wireless stick which connects instantly while the dell 1390 says "local only"
Still a couple of things to try but not holding much hope.

The Dell Network Card Now Works! ish!
It was MAC address filtering all along.
If you have this problem try adding the ethernet card MAC address and the WiFi one to the filter allow list. Thisl works on my works router (linksys) and all works great on WPA....

But... i have switched off MAC filtering on the Zyxel (at home) and it still only works intermittantly on the Dell Card. (limited or local only).

I have tried everything I can think of now.

Do certain routers cause this problem then or is it something else?

A Possible Solution
I found this article with the associated link to a new driver that is supposed to solve the problem.

Solution here.

I have just installed it...I am hoping for the best.

Thumbs up Fixed!!!!
I have just un-installed my wireless card driver :-
Start / Settings / Network Connections / Wireless Internet Connection (Properties)....
...Configure / Driver / Uninstall.

When it had fixed Windows automatically installed a new driver in second which fixed the problem.

Re-entered a new profile (SSID, key etc.) job done.

I hope this helps anyone who is still having issues

I'm running a Dell D820 with Vista Ultimate.

The Dells are all seeming to have this problem if you read the Dell forums, more so with the 3945g card. Even the updated drivers from Dell don't fix it.

What I see to be the problem is two-fold. Either the card dsiables itself and you have to reboot to get the wi-fi light to light back up or the wireless just hoses itself. For me this is happening with the internal card as well as an external wusb54g linksys adapter.

What I notice when I go to "Network Connections" when I can no longer access the web but my wi-fi light is still on is that Vista has switched my "connectivity" column status from "access to local and internet" to "local only" with absolutely no way to fix it. I attempt to delete the hardware from device manager and let it reinstall, or even assign an ip address manually. Sometimes that works and sometime it doesn't. Most time it doesn't and I just get pissed off to the point of almost tossing it in my Koi pond.

Currently, mine blew up again tonight for the 2nd night in a row and I'm having to connect to my router with a network cable to get online. For either of my wireless adapter, "network category" is labeled as "private". I've also played with deleteing my wireless network from the available wireless networks so it has to find it again and I have to retype my security key. Still doesn't fix it.

It blows and is absolutely ridiculous.

All these respones and nothing from the original poster? It is not a Vista probelm but most likely a hardware ro configuration issue on the part of the owner.
Such things as disabling the SSID do nothing for your security and in most cases casue connection issues.

I peronally have not called Linksys about this b/c this isn't a Linksys problem. XP laptops work fine on my network with no connection issues whatsoever. This is EITHER a vista issue or a dell issue but it doesn't seem to only be common to Dell's but does seem to be common with many Vista machines.

I've configured probably 100 wireless networks with single routers or multiple routers and machines running Windows XP. I've never had a problem until vista came into the picture with it's "Access to Local Only" crap.

I'm placing my blame on Vista and it's lack of explanation as to why it goes from "Access to Local and Internet" to "Access to Local Only" out of the blue in the middle of working.

Then last night, after screwing with the wireless card, uninstalling, reinstalling, deleting my wireless network and manually adding it back and none of that helping, the freaking think all the sudden switched back to "access to local and internet" while I was working via a network cable. It's the damndest thing I've ever seen.

I was still able to access other wireless local resource so I know the wireless wasn't dropping transmission.

has anyone figured out this problem? I called Dell Support the guy wanted $129.00 to remotely connect and fix the problem.
I said my computer does not even connect through a wired connection and he said he could fix it anyway!

Is there a driver for the 1521 with vista to fix the wireless connect problem?

Have you tried using the XP driver in "compatibility mode"? If you do not have a wired connection I would not be worried about wirelsss at this point.

Is it possible your router is firewalling your computer with vista on it?? My HP just plugged in and worked right away. However tried to install and use on a laptop--never got it to work wireless--only wired--aslso have another HP I finally had to get my cable supplier to come and hook up for me--it had XP on it??

I have a similar problem. I have a Asus laptop. My pc upstairs connects to it fine. My new laptop can see it but can not connect. I will connect to the unsecured networks but I do not want to connect just yet because I would rather have proper anti-virus/malware/ect installed on my laptop before it the web infects it with crap.

I have a HP with Vista Home Premium and I connect without a problem to my Netgear RangeMAX. I have no idea what is wrong with your connections but it certainly isn't Vista. Check configuration, Update drivers, Contact support.

Do those three things and all should be well
