Maybe I wasn't clear enough. There are 3 most common reasons XP or Vista will not install.
1) dirty or corrupted cd or cd drive
2) bad hard drive
3) Incompatible ram
You have # 3 as your problem.

Exclamation Confirming: I have the same experience with DELL Vista Install
I have a DELL 1720 which is brand new at hand.
The use took a wrong turn on Myspace, loaded something that nuked explorer.exe.
Unable to keystroke to rollback. Norton Security was present and worthless - as I usually remove and install the free one - she didn't and has me working on it now.

Steps that yield the failure:

Proceeded to use the 3 disc.
1. Install disc
2. OS Disc
3. Driver Disc

all present and accounted for.

The instructions state; First the Install disc, which really just nukes the hardware footprint, sets up the partitions for DELL direct etc. and then tells you to install off the OS disc.(Correctly using the other partion)

Install from the OS disc goes on easy, even selection of location is there, allows you to select the correct 71.#GB (#= and change) partiton.

It then goes farther allowing you to select English etc.. that sorta junk.

It copies files, installs items, hardware ect...

At the last step, "Completing Installation..." it just really hangs there. The lower green slider doesn't really move (I put a peice of tape on the screen to verify) and the 3 little periods are all that seem to be moving - that and the mouse is free to move about.

SATA Maybe????

----------------
Side deployment:
I tried the trusty WindowsXP CD and of course, there isn't a hard drive - Again, no SATA driver. go figure... (SlipStreme Project will resume next week to correct that issue.)
----------------

Anyway, I don't know what SATA driver the beast uses so I will have to go dig and build some mockup deployment and get ready to see if I can load them during the install.

I did find where in Vistas load-out to have it prompt me.
Any feedback on what drives to go get would be really helpful.
I'll post back the info to ensure that I get the system up and running.

NOTE> I saw one person just say, Ask D(h)ELL for the Recovery CDs... Question there I have is, why isn't that in the box when you buy it and, whats the use of the OS and Driver BS disc... he he he... sorta a waste of DELL money sending us targets or wind-chime dongles...

-------------------------------------------------------
UPDATE: Bad Disc.. OS disc had a problem..

Will post more - Any help would be appreciated.

Your problem isn't the same. The original poster added incompatible ram whioch is one of the most common reasons for failed install.

How I fixed the problem
HI guys. I fixed the problem awhile ago. This is how I fixed it.

Go to BIOS ---> Onboard Devices

Go to Flash Cache Module - Turn it OFF
Go to SATA Operation - Change AHCI to ATA

That should fix the freezing problem.

After that install all the drivers from Dell website.

Hi Malloc,

I also have a 1720 and had a lot of problems re-installing. I am now having the same problem you had. I followed your instructions and downloaded the SATA drivers from dell. I ran the exe and save all driver components to a thumb drive. Then I loaded the drivers (i think i did that correctly) located in DRIVERS/WINALL/ and installed two available drivers. Then I reintalled VISTA to the same partition (without formatting) but the installation STILL HANGS AT "Completing installation"...

IF you could help me with more information I would greatly appreciated. I am very frustrated.

Thanks

Jtun, Thanks a lot for your comment!

I also had the same problem & was able to complete the installation after those BIOS setting changes.

Cheers!

JTUN,

I registered just so I can thank you. As someone posted earlier, much success to you!

Quick question, do you put the settings back to the original settings once windows is installed?

Thanks a bunch.

Regarding a previous post, you really don't want to set your SATA operation to ATA. Although it will allow you to install Vista without freezing, the performance will not be nearly as good as with AHCI. I experienced this exact same problem and for me the best solution was to use the Dell Drivers And Utilites Disk to install the AHCI driver. During install you are given the opportunity to do this when you are messing around with the partition table. Flash Cache Module was fine enabled for me also.

Sorry for the late message to this post I started long ago. The information I disclosed in order to solve the Windows Vista installation onto Dell Inspiron 1720 was taught to me by a Dell technician.

However, what Unleadedblues says above:

-----------

What unleadedblues says is most likely the best way to reinstall Vista. I did not like downgrading my AHCI driver to ATA. I was unable to return my driver to AHCI after putting my setting to ATA.

I wish I had known about that installation process earlier. Perhaps I will when I want to.

Hey,

I got to tell you the problem I'm experiencing with my own computer now since I've changed AHCI to ATA and installed Vista Home Premium on my Dell Inspiron 1720. Well, I got blue screens 2 times that I can really remember. One long ago was randomn, but the recent one seems like it occured after installing a new mouse. Not sure whether or not it was due to the installation hardware. All I know is that it occurred 1 minute after installing the cd to my computer. I also get a black screen that blinks once in a while when I play World of Warcraft, but I'm not sure if that's a video card issue. The black screen blinking is very annoying and I don't know why it keeps doing that.

Please e-mail me at ookazenokoeoo@hotmail.com if you want to talk to me about these issues.
