Lost Files?
I updated my Dell XPS m1210 to Windows Vista Ultimate. In order to uninstall my old Symantic Antivirus, I had to run a script (provided by my Univerity's help desk). After doing so, it restarted and I got the windows boot screen. I had to insert the vista cd to boot, and restore.

I also had to do a system restore to an earlier date due to problems.

After doing both of these, I can't get my files. My Documents, My Pictures, My Music.. etc.

If I search for them, it finds them, but can't open them. It says the file has been changed or moved.

Is there a way to get my files?

Thank You for any help or suggestions.

If you did an upgrade then you see the old My Documents folders etc...but they will no longer function. They are now in a folder called "User" and are called "Documents" and My Pictures i.e. are separate as "Pictures" and "Music" in the user (then your name) folder....

I've already looked in those folders, and they are empty.

Any other suggestions?

It's likely the restore wiped the drive. That would explain why the files are gone.

Go to Control Panel > Folder Options and make hidden files visible.

System Restore should not do that.

Looks like the poster did both.

Hi loramore

I hope you are able to recover all your lost files, but this happens sometimes, with upgrades and mods.
As pervious posts, they maybe still there - somewhere ????
System Restore should have retained your documents. Try alternative restore points, if available, after reboot.

Past experience has taught me to always backup all important documents, prior to any serious operations.
